{"id":127301,"date":"2025-09-08T07:50:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T07:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/127301\/"},"modified":"2025-09-08T07:50:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T07:50:09","slug":"white-shark-spotted-near-manly-prompts-beach-alarm-after-fatal-dee-why-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/127301\/","title":{"rendered":"White shark spotted near Manly prompts beach alarm after fatal Dee Why attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A tagged white shark has been spotted off Manly Beach two days after surfer Mercury Psillakis was fatally mauled by a shark at nearby Dee Why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A shark tag sensor went off at 10.51am on Monday at the North Steyne receiver, according to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development&#8217;s (DPIRD) Shark Smart service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The beach alarm system was then activated at Manly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The shark was originally tagged at Diggers Beach in Coffs Harbour in 2023 and was last seen on the Central Coast in June before being recorded on Sydney&#8217;s Northern Beaches today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;At the time it was tagged, it was 2.03 metres total length,&#8221; a statement from DPI said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sydney's Manly Beach\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/670d793ce1b442260238f0d3a6309835\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sydney&#8217;s Manly Beach on Saturday, when swimmers were ordered to leave the water after a shark attacked a man in Dee Why. final act of surfer killed in shark attack<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A childhood friend has described how Mercury Psillakis steered his friends to safety before being mauled by a shark at Sydney&#8217;s Northern Beaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Police said his body was retrieved a short time later and that he was missing &#8220;a number of limbs&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The beach at Dee Why was subject to a 72-hour closure while beaches from Narrabeen to Manly were closed for 24 hours after the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A state government plan to trial removing shark nets from one beach on the Northern Beaches has been put on hold in the aftermath of Mr Psillakis&#8217;
