However, Mercedes elected to switch to the soft compound for his final lap in Q3 despite his protests, and he settled for P5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Like the other drivers in the <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/results\/2025\/races\/1268\/italy\/race-result\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">top five<\/a>, Russell\u2019s position hadn\u2019t changed by the time the chequered flag fell, despite his early attempts to overtake the lead Ferrari of <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/i-couldnt-do-much-more-leclerc-rues-not-easy-day-after-taking-p4-at-monza.1jjASsdIkxeUNwPQowmytu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Leclerc<\/a>. Every time he closed the gap, it opened up again as they raced down the straights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cWe were expecting to be two-tenths behind <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/teams\/ferrari\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ferrari<\/a> and a bit more behind everyone else,\u201d he admitted after the race. \u201cI was reasonably pleased \u2013 I don\u2019t think we could have done anything more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cI think it was just very challenging to get by Charles \u2013 they were so fast on the straights. Had I just managed to get past him, it could have been a slightly different picture. Obviously that wasn\u2019t the case. It was a pretty scrappy opening few laps, but fifth was where the car deserved to finish today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cObviously a bit of a shame to lose more ground to Ferrari in the constructors\u2019, but I was pretty satisfied with the race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">The Brackley outfit are now 20 points behind their Italian rivals in the <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/results\/2025\/team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">standings<\/a>, with <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/drivers\/kimi-antonelli\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kimi Antonelli<\/a> adding two points to the tally in his second home event of the season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">Recovering from a damaging spin in <a class=\"text-brand-hot-red underline decoration-1 hover:decoration-[3px]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/highlights-relive-fp2-as-norris-goes-fastest-and-antonelli-brings-out-the.7GM4a0frdlJcspAs14Niqn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FP2<\/a>, the 19-year-old secured sixth place on the grid and impressed his home crowd, with both Mercedes drivers benefitting from Lewis Hamilton\u2019s five-place grid penalty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">However, a lacklustre start to the race saw Antonelli lose a handful of positions before he was later handed a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits multiple times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">He said: \u201cIt was a difficult race. I made a mistake at the start and lost brake traction, so lost a lot of places there and that compromised pretty much the [whole] race because I found myself on the back foot and in a DRS train.<\/p>\n<p class=\"typography-module_body-s-regular__ul7F5 typography-module_md_body-m-regular__d9VRg typography-module_lg_body-l-regular__dPa5z\">\u201cIt was difficult to get by. The pace on the mediums was actually not too bad, but then on the hards, I struggled to find my rhythm.
