Hanks has long been a champion of US service members and veterans, portraying them in blockbuster movies \u2013 including Saving Private Ryan and Forrest Gump \u2013 and supporting the creation of memorials and museums across the country. <\/p>\n
He has also been a longtime backer of Democrats, including President Joe Biden, who ousted Trump from the White House in 2020.<\/p>\n
Since returning to office, Trump and his Defence Secretary, Pete Hegseth, have sought to root out what they have derided as politics and \u201cwokeness\u201d in the armed forces. <\/p>\n
In January, Trump signed an executive order aimed at phasing out diversity, equity and inclusion programmes inside the military.<\/p>\n
Trump appeared to allude to the alumni group\u2019s decision while giving a speech in Washington, calling the cancellation of the ceremony \u201cappropriate\u201d. <\/p>\n
He suggested it was part of his administration\u2019s efforts to root out the \u201cwoke agenda\u201d, likening it to a \u201cweed\u201d that keeps re-emerging.<\/p>\n
Trump suggested that other awards shows, beyond the military, should take note of the decision by the West Point alumni group.<\/p>\n
