And it could well be visible to the naked eye as it passes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">A few days ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/An-interstellar-object-is-currently-traveling-through-our-solar-system-at-60-km-per-second.1050234.0.html\" target=\"_self\" class=\"internal-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an interstellar visitor was spotted in our solar system<\/a>. And as observations continue, astronomers believe it could become visible to the naked eye as it passes close to the Sun.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Named <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/planetary-defense\/2025\/07\/02\/nasa-discovers-interstellar-comet-moving-through-solar-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">3I\/ATLAS<\/a>, it could well be one of the oldest objects ever observed by mankind. Estimates put its age at around three billion years, and its speed at a staggering 210,000 km per hour. As for its origin, scientists and astronomers believe that it can be traced back to a different region of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/This-stunning-Milky-Way-infrared-image-is-the-most-detailed-one-yet-compiled-from-500-terabytes-of-data.894627.0.html\" target=\"_self\" class=\"internal-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Milky Way<\/a> than the one we&#8217;re in now.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">More precisely, studies have been carried out using a computer model developed and updated by <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2507.05318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">researchers at Oxford University<\/a>. This software is fed by data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Gaia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gaia space observatory<\/a>, making it possible to define an origin located in the \u201cthick disk\u201d of our galaxy, a place where many ancient stars were formed.&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">But it&#8217;s its composition that has scientists intrigued. This interstellar object is rich in water ice. And this could lead to the appearance of a tail when it comes close to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/For-the-first-time-images-of-the-South-Pole-of-the-Sun-have-been-unveiled.1039954.0.html\" target=\"_self\" class=\"internal-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sun<\/a>, due to its vaporization by solar rays. Hopkins\/\u014ctautahi-Oxford team)<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">But while this may be the stuff of dreams, as was the case with comet <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comet_NEOWISE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">C\/2020 F3 Neowise<\/a>, we must be cautious. Indeed, its trajectory is not yet defined with any great precision, although we do know that it will pass close to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/SpaceX-Mars-Starship-rocket-explodes-prior-to-static-fire-launch-system-test-in-a-major-anomaly.1039637.0.html\" target=\"_self\" class=\"internal-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mars<\/a>. Further observations are needed to determine its direction through our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/The-solar-system-as-we-know-it-may-change-forever.1037482.0.html\" target=\"_self\" class=\"internal-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">solar system<\/a>, and whether it will be able to put on a unique show for several days. &#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Beyond this aspect, 3I\/ATLAS will enable scientists to better understand our universe and what&#8217;s going on outside the solar system.
