(ABC Rural: Kim Honan)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The government has announced the park and a moratorium on supply but no guidance yet on how critical supply to the housing industry will be served or what support for workers to be retrenched will be offered,&#8221; Mr Dadd said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Our priority will be on trying to comfort very concerned workers, customers and suppliers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After years of talks, timber mill owners said phasing in a logging moratorium would have helped with planning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mill owner Andrew Williams, of the 75-year-old Williams Timbers business in Bucca, north-west of Coffs Harbour, said the immediate moratorium on logging added confusion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today was a hard day, when you turn up to work [and] you have got 12 guys that you need to talk to about the future of their jobs and their livelihoods,&#8221;  Mr Williams said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s something that I wasn&#8217;t really prepared for, at such short notice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Williams said the decision could jeopardise his ability to fulfil contracts to supply power poles to Victoria, railway sleepers and fencing to Queensland and bridge timbers in New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Depending on what is allocated, it will be hard to fill orders,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">NSW Timber president Andrew Hurford said the industry was &#8220;shocked and disappointed&#8221; with the announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re certainly having to deal with workers and contractors who are extremely distressed and disappointed and really just trying to come to grips with this unnecessary decision,&#8221; Mr Hurford said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man smiles as he stands next to a pile of logs.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/a0197a092e993ca7d8271f328b33f6e5\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Andrew Hurford says the timber industry is shocked by the moratorium on logging on the Mid North Coast. (ABC Rural: Kim Honan)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said the move would significantly impact hardwood supply on the NSW north coast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a growing demand with a shrinking supply and the only way that gap can be filled unfortunately is by giving away Australian jobs and exporting those jobs offshore,&#8221;  Mr Hurford said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He called on the state government to meet with the timber industry to discuss how the production of Australian hardwood could continue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We hear a lot about the commitment to the Great Koala National Park but [NSW Premier] Chris Minns also made a commitment to a sustainable timber industry,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Hopefully additional plantations will be a part of that [and] another important part is that we remove obstacles to managing our private native forests so we can continue to build on that supply.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-09\/epbc-environment-laws-no-go-zones\/105748644\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;No-go&#8217; zones where development will &#8220;simply not be allowed&#8221; will be created in the overhaul of Australia&#8217;s environment laws, minister Murray Watt says.<\/p>\n<p>Support for workers<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The state government announced a worker and industry support package for those affected, as well as $6 million in community and business support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For workers, that included Job Seeker-style payments equivalent to their wage and free access to health, legal, and financial services, as well as training support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tony Callinan from the Australian Workers&#8217; Union said the offer fell short.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s local communities on the Mid North Coast that have a strong reliance and a proud history in forestry and harvesting,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But at the same time, with awareness that there will some impacts \u2014 it&#8217;s a balance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said the timber industry and unions had been involved in consultation about the koala park, and it was always on the cards to include all of the region&#8217;s state forests in the national park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This is not unknown in the sense that it was a clear election promise of the Minns government,&#8221;
