(ABC News: Steve Keen)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">With a rapidly growing population and regular congestion, he said a more intensive solution was needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re looking for a bit more than that to ensure the southern Gold Coast has got a genuine alternative public transport option available,&#8221; Cr Hammel said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;To me [that] says this state government has not got any intention of delivering a full public transport corridor from Burleigh to Coolangatta.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rapid vs enhanced<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In announcing the canning of the light rail last week, Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the government would roll out a &#8220;rapid bus transit system&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve actually got capacity now to have a better connected Gold Coast, particularly southern Gold Coast, than what a light rail, which is a fixed tram-line, could have provided,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A rapid bus transit system uses higher-capacity buses \u2014 as the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-01-28\/brisbane-metro-route-opens-years-of-planning\/104865802\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104865802\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brisbane Metro<\/a> does \u2014 that travel along dedicated lanes to deliver faster commute times.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A construction site next to a bowling green in an urban area, as seen from above.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/774694da8dbb51f6aa4e8c69bd986482\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The under-construction Burleigh Heads light rail station sits next to the popular bowls club and Memorial Park. (ABC Gold Coast: Dominic Cansdale)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the government review released last week highlighted issues with the construction of a rapid bus system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[It would] involve construction of dedicated busways for use by metro-style buses, as well as construction of new bridges over the Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creeks and an interchange at Burleigh Heads.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The report concluded that rapid bus transit would not be feasible because it would require &#8220;the resumption of significant areas of land&#8221; at the Burleigh Heads Bowls Club and Memorial Park.<\/p>\n<p>More resumptions<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The state government has repeatedly <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-02\/gold-coast-development-will-continue-mayor-says\/105723554\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105723554\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ruled out building a bus depot<\/a> or interchange over the Burleigh Heads Bowls Club or Memorial Park.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-07\/gold-coast-light-rail-cut-short-of-final-destination\/105720840\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gold Coast left with &#8216;half finished&#8217; project<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">This city realised it was headed towards gridlock almost 30 years ago. Even so, the final stage of its solution has been scrapped by its state government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Cr Hammel said rapid buses, some articulated and measuring 24 metres long, would need an interchange or depot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;How do you get people off light rail and on to these other services? If it needs to be seamless, it&#8217;s going to have to be right next to it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If they want to get down to Palm Beach, Coolangatta or further, how are they getting on to a bus?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The report found that building dedicated bus lanes would require parts of Burleigh Heads National Park to be resumed so that roads could be widened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It also found that dedicated bus lanes would impact more properties than light rail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The report said bus lanes would require the compulsory acquisition of 78 properties and partial resumption of 168 properties, which is 11 more than the light rail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The review also noted that &#8220;enhanced&#8221; lanes do not require any property resumptions or the construction of dedicated lanes, but would instead give buses priority over other traffic at intersections.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bridge over a waterway flowing into the ocean, as seen from above.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757526854_849_c9c300b461e7202f5482779805e63254\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A new bridge over Tallebudgera Creek will need to be built for a rapid buses, according to a state government review.
