We picture ourselves wearing uniforms on wards where compassion meets clinical precision.

We push through lectures, skills practice, exams and around 2,300 hours of unpaid placement. All driven by the hope that, one day, we will proudly wear the tunics of registered nurses in intensive care, community settings, mental health or paediatrics. Each of us inspired by a different path, yet united by one goal: to make a difference.

But after three intense years, a harsh reality is sinking in: “there are no jobs” not on our dream wards, not even in the settings we trained in.

I am a third-year nursing student on the edge of qualification. By now, my cohort should be mapping career plans, securing preceptorships and preparing to contribute meaningfully to the NHS.

“When newly qualified nurses are left with no option but to take jobs unrelated to their education, what message are we sending to future health professionals?”

Instead, many newly qualified nurses are finding themselves behind tills, on retail floors or answering phones in call centres, not because they have abandoned nursing, but because nursing opportunities have abandoned them.

Is this just a phase for newly qualified nurses, or is this the new reality? Has something gone fundamentally wrong?

It is a painful irony. At the same time the NHS reports over 40,000 nursing vacancies many trusts have frozen recruitment for band 5 posts due to budget constraints.

We are witnessing a workforce crisis, yet the thousands of newly qualified nurses ready to fill the gap are being turned away.

We are qualified, motivated and willing. So, what is going wrong?

This is not just about missing out on our ‘dream specialties’. It is about the disillusionment settling in as we enter a profession that is already battling to retain staff.

When newly qualified nurses are left with no option but to take jobs unrelated to their education, what message are we sending to future health professionals?

After years of commitment, many of us are left asking painful questions: is nursing still the rewarding, stable, meaningful and impactful career we were promised? How long will we wait for a chance to practise the profession we trained for?

For me, this is more than a statistic, it is personal. Once, conversations with fellow students were filled with excitement: “I want to work in neonatal”, “I see myself in A&E”, “I’m passionate about community nursing”.

Now, those conversations are changing: “Should I apply to work in a supermarket?”, “Maybe a coffee shop, just to stay sustained after qualifying?”

Is this really what we have been preparing for?

If this trend continues, nursing is left to face a dangerous cycle: a shortage of nurses, pressure on existing staff, burnout, poor retention, fewer roles for new nurses, a drop in applicants to nursing course and long-term workforce collapse.

Already, UCAS data shows a 16% decline in nursing course applications in 2024 compared to 2022. A warning sign that should concern anyone who relies on the NHS (which is all of us).

So, we ask again, is this a temporary setback, or a sign of systemic failure in nursing workforce planning?

We are standing at a crossroads; between a career we were trained for and a system that no longer seems to welcome us. To policymakers, NHS trusts, and the public: we urge reflection. What is the cost of discouraging the next generation of nurses?

We have already given so much, we showed up during the Covid-19 pandemic, completed our training amid extraordinary circumstances, worked unpaid, and stayed committed. Now, we are asking for what was promised: a fair chance to begin.

Let’s ask the difficult questions. Let’s advocate for action. Let’s protect the future of nursing, before more of us trade scrubs for shelves permanently.

Could this be just a phase? We hope so. But without meaningful action, it risks becoming the new norm.

Deborah Amu is a third-year adult nursing student at the University of Northampton and Nursing Times student editor 2024-25.

From our first year as student nurses, we dream big.
