As one of the best <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/back-exercises\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/back-exercises\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">back exercises<\/a>, it forces you to engage your scapula (the real name for the shoulder blades) and correct your poor posture in one easy way.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-960af0ab-5318-4161-a3b0-64f4a00d7916\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What are wall angels?<\/p>\n<p id=\"e343661c-fcd7-4233-add3-dfe032e1eab1\">Wall angels are an exercise that focuses on posture and mobility, done standing and leaning against a wall. As the name suggests, this is the same movement but on a thick yoga mat instead of against a wall.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to do it:<\/p>\n<p>Lie on your back, knees and elbows bent.Slide your arms upwards until your hands meet overhead or as close as possible.Take a breath in and out.On the exhale, bring your arms back down as far you can, making a &#8216;W&#8217; shape with your head between your arms.<a id=\"elk-96fdcfba-d527-4b65-b6fa-02189d3cfa8b\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What are wall angels good for?<a id=\"elk-1-relieving-tension-in-the-upper-back\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>1. Relieving tension in the upper back<\/p>\n<p id=\"cd121d3d-4be0-42e3-8371-4c5d33d33651\">&#8220;By gently mobilising the shoulder blades, wall angels help release tension in the upper back and shoulders,&#8221; says <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rebecca_dadoun\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rebecca_dadoun\/?hl=en\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rebecca Dadoun<\/a>, a certified Pilates teacher and the founder of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pilates-prescription.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.pilates-prescription.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pilates Prescription<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially helpful for those of us who work hunched over a desk. She explains that they won\u2019t \u201cfix\u201d back pain, but \u201cthey do create more space and movement in commonly stiff areas\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-2-boosts-scapula-control\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>2. Boosts scapula control<\/p>\n<p id=\"6587e44f-5a35-4493-af2e-6fe933c23012\">Wall angels \u201chelp you reconnect to the muscles that stabilise your shoulder blades,\u201d says Dadoun. She says this will improve your posture and support healthier movement patterns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s less about building brute strength and more about coordination and control,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p>Better scapula control could also help you master other <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/strength-training-for-women\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/strength-training-for-women\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resistance training<\/a> exercises, as most &#8211; including deadlifts, chest presses, and pull-ups &#8211; need some back engagement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey bring awareness to alignment, gently engaging postural muscles so your body relearns how to hold a more upright, supported position,\u201d says Dadoun.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-3-stretches-out-the-back-muscles\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>3. Stretches out the back muscles<\/p>\n<p id=\"6398c404-2f5b-4c52-9a6d-09b66af84503\">Wall angels also stretch other muscles in the upper body, including the chest and muscles on the front of the shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>For those who love an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/upper-body-dumbbell-workout\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/upper-body-dumbbell-workout\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">upper-body dumbbell workout <\/a>or similar, this exercise can be an effective way to loosen up muscles that become tight and shortened through exercises like the bench press.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-4-may-boost-strength\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>4. May boost strength<\/p>\n<p id=\"519674a0-e10e-47df-a3e4-adce32faa29b\">If you&#8217;re new to working these muscles, you may find that wall angels are all you need to start building strength as it&#8217;ll be a challenge you&#8217;re not accustomed to.<\/p>\n<p>Gopal says once you&#8217;ve mastered your technique and improved your posture, you can add <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-dumbbells\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-dumbbells\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dumbbells<\/a> and<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-kettlebells\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-kettlebells\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> kettlebells<\/a>, or <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-resistance-bands\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-resistance-bands\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resistance bands<\/a>, to work your muscles even harder.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5-improves-core-strength\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>5.
