This should be a moment that jolts America.<\/p>\n

A 31-year-old father of two has been killed on a college campus in what authorities are calling a political assassination.<\/p>\n

For Charlie Kirk’s family and loved ones, it must be a day of torment. To lose him so suddenly, so publicly. His life stolen in an instant.<\/p>\n

Condemnation came swiftly and forcefully from across the political spectrum. Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom called the attack “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible”, while Republican Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he was “heartbroken and outraged by the assassination of Charlie Kirk”.<\/p>\n

And yet, despite the bipartisan outrage, it’s hard to believe this latest act of hatred will spark any meaningful national reckoning.<\/p>\n

Previous incidents of targeted political violence have faded from public consciousness without prompting lasting change.<\/p>\n

There was the January 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol<\/a>, where Trump supporters attacked the seat of US democracy. The 2022 hammer attack on Paul Pelosi<\/a>, husband of former speaker Nancy Pelosi, which left him with a fractured skull and other serious injuries. The 2024 attempted assassination of US President Donald Trump<\/a>, where a bullet grazed his ear, followed by another foiled attempt just weeks later<\/a>. And this year, the shootings of two Minnesota politicians and their partners, which left one couple dead.<\/p>\n

Any one of these events should have forced a national conversation about the roots and risks of political violence.<\/p>\n

But as with America’s long history of mass shootings, initial horror rarely leads to structural change. In a country as heavily armed as the United States, the threat of political violence is ever present.<\/p>\n

Political polarisation in the US has deepened<\/p>\n

Kirk rose to prominence as a conservative activist, known for engaging in heated debates on progressive college campuses. He was persuasive, provocative and widely followed, with his social media reach well into the millions.<\/p>\n

He was loved by the MAGA base but that also made him a target.<\/p>\n

Kirk was no stranger to verbal abuse and low-level threats, which is why he often travelled with a security team. Yet, as Trump’s near-death experience showed, even well-trained security can be powerless against a determined assassin with a high-powered rifle.<\/p>\n

After surviving his own assassination attempt, Trump called for national unity. But since his re-election, polarisation has only deepened.<\/p>\n

That divide was on full display today in Congress. The House of Representatives held a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk. But Representative Lauren Boebert demanded a spoken prayer, saying: “I believe silent prayers get silent results.” Her request was met with groans from Democrats.<\/p>\n

Republican Anna Paulina Luna pointed across the aisle and declared: “You all caused this.”<\/p>\n

One Democrat responded: “Pass some gun laws.”<\/p>\n

Even in the face of a political assassination, an act that should transcend partisanship, it seems unlikely that America will fundamentally change how its politics are fought.<\/p>\n
