{"id":134489,"date":"2025-09-11T05:18:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T05:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/134489\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T05:18:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T05:18:10","slug":"are-bdms-the-next-casualty-in-the-major-banks-ai-driven-overhaul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/134489\/","title":{"rendered":"Are BDMs the next casualty in the major banks\u2019 AI-driven overhaul?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Over the course of 2025, there have been job cuts announced at each of the major banks, many fuelled by increased AI adoption. Are BDMs next on the chopping block?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Just this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrleader.com.au\/business\/27268-anz-to-cut-3-500-jobs-by-september-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ANZ <\/a>announced it would be cutting 3,500 jobs \u201cto better focus on priorities\u201d, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrleader.com.au\/business\/27271-nab-to-cut-over-400-jobs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NAB<\/a> said it was cutting 410 roles in a bid to remove duplication and simplify team structures.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This follows similar headlines back in May when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brokerdaily.au\/lender\/20423-westpac-set-to-slash-1-500-jobs-union-calls-for-the-move-to-be-immediately-shelved\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Westpac <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brokerdaily.au\/lender\/20414-cba-job-cuts-climb-to-nearly-800-in-past-12-months-amid-swollen-profits\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CBA <\/a>announced they would be culling 1,500 jobs and 163 jobs, respectively.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While reasons for the job cuts are mixed, many are spurred by the advancement of AI. Customer service is an area that has been rife with job cuts following these innovations.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Business development managers (BDMs) could be the next roles that are swallowed by AI adoption, as they\u2019re partly customer service representatives for brokers.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Broker Daily reached out to each of the big four banks for comment on this topic but received no response.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Is AI the future of the majors&#8217; BDMs?&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Speaking with Broker Daily, LoanOptions.ai\u2019s founder and CEO, Julian Fayad, believes there could very well be a future where BDMs at the big four are replaced by AI.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He believes many of the basic challenges that are raised by brokers could be handled by AI. AI BDMs are \u201cinfinitely scalable\u201d and quick to respond. The more complex scenarios are where BDMs thrive.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHaving people spend 30 minutes in traffic in between meetings, from the bank\u2019s perspective, it\u2019s not the best use of their time. They can do this digitally.&#8221;&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Fayad said that many brokers struggle with slow responses from BDMs \u2013 a challenge that could be overcome through AI.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While this certainly doesn\u2019t apply to all BDMs, and some are far more responsive than others, the brokers who struggle with these issues let deals pass by as they cannot access timely support.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Fayad believes brokers would be receptive to an AI BDM. While it may not be suitable for more complex issues, quick support on more traditional queries would be welcome.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIf you ask a lot of brokers, BDMs don\u2019t always pick up the phone. And it\u2019s because of the way their role\u2019s structured. It\u2019s like they\u2019re incentivised by the bank to do as many meetings and bring on as much business as they possibly can,\u201d said Fayad.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c[Some BDMs] call you back but it\u2019ll be two days later and the deal\u2019s already gone somewhere else.\u201d&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sheng Ye, mortgage broker at Home Loan Experts, enjoys the connection he has with his BDM, but said the human element can either make or break a deal.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said that without a BDM, he\u2019s afraid the support would become \u201ccold and distant\u201d.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI don\u2019t think AI should replace the BDM\u2019s role; however, AI could assist human BDMs in answering brokers\u2019 policy questions and free humans from needing to search databases. AI would make it easier for human BDMs to answer a broker\u2019s queries,\u201d said Ye.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Fellow Home Loan Experts broker Jonathan Preston doesn\u2019t see AI replacing BDMs in the near term.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The complexity of queries and the need for tailored support will keep the proposition unchanged for the time being.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAn AI-powered BDM sounds like a nightmare at this stage,\u201d Preston said.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThere will always be a need for a point where you can escalate past the chatbot. We are in a highly regulated industry, people have their most expensive assets at risk, they are at risk of lawsuits and formal complaints. Sometimes, a chatbot is not what you are looking for in the heat of the moment.\u201d&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The future instead will be more BDMs leveraging AI to drive efficiency. Preston said the \u201cdeskbound\u201d BDMs who aren\u2019t engaged with their brokers are most at risk of being \u201cautomated out\u201d.<br style=\"mso-special-character: line-break;\"\/>&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Brokers and BDMs have an almost symbiotic relationship.
