E\ufeffmma Heming Willis<\/a>, wife of Bruce Willis<\/a>, has revealed the new ways she communicates with her husband following his dementia diagnosis.<\/p>\n

In her book titled \ufeffThe Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, she writes about the impact the movie star’s frontotemporal dementia<\/a> has had on her and her husband.<\/p>\n

Willis is no longer able to speak or move, with one of the major symptoms of FTD’s including struggling with decision-making, movement, speaking or language comprehension.<\/p>\n

\"E\ufeffmmaE\ufeffmma Heming Willis has revealed the new ways she communicates with her husband following his dementia diagnosis in her new book. (Instagram)<\/p>\n

“Because Bruce can’t communicate with me (due to the variant of FTD he has, primary progressive aphasia), I must make judgment calls for him about absolutely everything,” she wrote.<\/p>\n

“I can’t ask him how he’s feeling, what’s wrong or if something hurts.<\/p>\n

“Instead, I read his body language or look into his eyes to understand what’s bothering him and what he’s experiencing.<\/p>\n

“I compare this to the instinct that you have as a parent. With just one glance at your child, you can tell immediately if something isn’t right.<\/p>\n

“And with one look at Bruce, I can tell if his neck hurts or if he’s got a headache.”<\/p>\n

In August, she revealed that \ufeffWillis had been moved into a separate home with full-time carers.<\/p>\n

She faced backlash for the decision, defending the move<\/a> on Instagram<\/a> and in an appearance on Good Morning America \ufeffearlier this week.<\/p>\n

“It was a hard decision for us, but it was the safest and best decision not just for Bruce but also for our two young girls,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It’s really not up for debate, I know that Bruce has the best care 100 per cent of the time.<\/p>\n

“His needs are met 100 per cent of the time, as well as our two young daughters. So I’m not gonna take a vote on that.”<\/p>\n

Willis’ family announced the actor had been diagnosed with dementia in February 2023, a year and a half after \ufeffthey announced his retirement from acting due to a diagnosis of aphasia, a condition that impacts language.<\/p>\n

They later confirmed the \ufeffaphasia was a symptom of FTD.<\/p>\n
