{"id":136449,"date":"2025-09-12T00:33:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T00:33:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/136449\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T00:33:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T00:33:15","slug":"windsor-cinema-7000-people-call-to-save-historic-nedlands-movies-from-potential-demolition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/136449\/","title":{"rendered":"Windsor Cinema: 7000 people call to save historic Nedlands movies from potential demolition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">More than 7000 people have signed a petition to save Nedlands\u2019 historic Windsor Cinema amid fears the building could be reduced to rubble after being listed for sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The 1937-built structure hit the market in September last year, with the advertisement promoting \u201chigh-density large-scale future redevelopment options\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The sales memorandum references plans for new 17 to 24-storey towers over the road as an example of the potential planning variations at the 2532sqm site, though it anticipates any new project will \u201cretain a nod to its historic roots\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">More than 7000 people have signed a petition on change.org calling for the building to be State Heritage-listed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Greens MLC Brad Pettitt presented a similar petition to State Parliament\u2019s Legislative Council on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThe Windsor Cinema in Nedlands, constructed in 1937, is an important part of WA\u2019s cultural heritage and should be conserved for the benefit of all Western Australians,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2f2ee0c7dac98a8e41422fab53a6c314ceb6dd67.jpg\" alt=\"Windsor cinema in Nedlands up for sale\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconWindsor cinema in Nedlands up for sale Credit: supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">In 2020, the State Heritage Council recommended the building should not be added to the register \u2014 a decision Mr Pettitt said was contested by more than 20 leading heritage professionals and was \u201cfundamentally flawed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Mr Pettitt claimed the City of Nedlands also failed to protect the cinema.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cWithout statutory heritage protection, there is a genuine risk that the Windsor Cinema may be subject to development that could irreversibly compromise its heritage values or even result in its demolition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cNow we ask the Legislative Council &#8230; to call on the State Heritage Council to undertake an independent review of the heritage assessment of the Windsor Cinema and its decision not to recommend the place for inclusion on the State Register of Heritage Places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/e444de9b102052eb995093d5402bab19b7ac7a7c.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial view of Windsor cinema site\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconAerial view of Windsor cinema site Credit: supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The cinema complex is being sold by Independent Cinemas, which Chrissy Hunt and Samuel Gribble own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Ray White agent Stephen Harrison said the building had a 1479sqm footprint, including three working cinema screens, and drew an annual income of $434,100.
