Succession might have finished years ago, but the Murdochs have arguably experienced their own season finale.<\/p>\n

This week it was announced Rupert Murdoch’s family had reached a deal that guarantees eldest son Lachlan will retain control of his father’s media empire<\/a> after the elderly patriarch’s death.<\/p>\n

It ends a bitter legal dispute between the warring Murdoch siblings that drew parallels to the hit HBO series Succession \u2014 and a warning for spoilers ahead.<\/p>\n

Throughout the show, Kendall Roy (the eldest son from media mogul Logan Roy’s second marriage) battles his siblings to prove to his father he is the rightful heir to the multi-billion-dollar family business.<\/p>\n

Succession’s creator, Jesse Armstrong, says the Murdochs helped inspire his characters, along with other family media dynasties<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As the show grew in popularity, so too did the Murdoch family’s awareness of the show’s striking similarities to their lives.<\/p>\n

When Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall divorced, Vanity Fair reported one of the terms of the settlement was that Hall couldn’t give story ideas to the writers on Succession<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Then when the show killed off its aging patriarch, The New York Times reported Elisabeth Murdoch was so “panicked” by the under-preparedness of the characters that it led to the creation of “the Succession Memo”<\/a> \u2014 a public relations strategy intended to prevent a real-life repeat of the Roy family chaos.<\/p>\n

We won’t tell you which sibling ends up reigning supreme at the end of Succession.<\/p>\n

But as Lachlan Murdoch’s ascension to the head of the family business is cemented, can you tell his quotes apart from Succession’s self-professed “eldest boy”, Kendall Roy?<\/p>\n
