significant impacts to the rock art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This project will be operated in a way\u00a0that does not cause unacceptable\u00a0impacts to the rock art including by\u00a0restricting our emissions,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The Albanese government is committed to protecting the environment and First Nations cultural heritage \u2014 and protecting jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It does not have to be one or the other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Clear way forward&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Peter Hicks, chair of the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation welcomed the declaration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Now, with this declaration, we have an even clearer way forward and we thank the Federal Government for enacting a critical part of Australia&#8217;s legislative framework to ensure that this sacred place is protected in perpetuity,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement published minutes after Mr Watt announced his decision, Woodside&#8217;s chief operating officer Liz Westcott said it included rigorous conditions to manage the protection of cultural heritage.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"110925murujuga001\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/f8bd456af72d0d3badf08fc90919cc58\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Murujuga National Park is located on the Burrup Peninsula, 1530km north of Perth, and is the site of ancient aboriginal rock art.\u00a0 (ABC Pilbara: Kelsey Reid)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That included additional monitoring of air emissions to protect the adjacent heritage precinct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Westcott promoted the project&#8217;s economic benefits saying it had &#8220;paid more than $40 billion in royalties and excise, supported thousands of Australian jobs and contributed well over $300 million to communities in the Pilbara through social investment initiatives and infrastructure support&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said the project had produced more than 6,000 petajoules of domestic gas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If used just for household electricity, this is enough to power homes in a city the size of Perth for approximately 175 years,&#8221; (ABC News: David Sciasci)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Speaking before the final approval, Leader Larissa Waters also criticised how long it&#8217;s taken the two parties to reach an agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Gas companies get to negotiate on what their environmental conditions are going to be, it&#8217;s an absolute farce,&#8221; she said<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But what is clear is that this gas project is an absolute stinker &#8230; it will be a climate disaster.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>International challenges<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Watt&#8217;s final approval comes a day after Vanuatu&#8217;s climate minister warned Prime Minister Anthony Albanese the gas project could violate <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-11\/vanuatu-warns-australia-about-expansion-of-woodside-gas-project\/105759934\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105759934\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia&#8217;s international climate change obligations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A recent <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-24\/icj-climate-change-advisory-opinion-handed-down\/105561282\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landmark ICJ advisory opinion<\/a> found all states were legally compelled to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address the adverse impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Federal Greens have called the facilities <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/radionational-breakfast\/greens-slam-green-light-for-woodside-s-north-west-shelf\/105350744\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/audiosegment\/105350744\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a &#8220;carbon bomb&#8221;<\/a>, while the prime minister has defended the approval as ensuring &#8220;energy security&#8221; for the transition to renewables.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Watt&#8217;s partial declaration today to protect the rock art heritage site follows Raelene Cooper&#8217;s application for the minister to intervene in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Her aim was to protect the landscape of ancient rocks located on the Burrup Peninsula surrounding Woodside&#8217;s Karratha Gas Plant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She later took\u00a0the case to the Federal Court, where Justice Angus Stewart found last month the minister had taken an unreasonable amount of time to respond to the application.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An Indigenous woman in a black t-shirt perched on a red rock on WA's Burrup Peninsula.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/76fb98bd7b16d351b77d678b6c7e4ea3\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Raelene Cooper said the decision is a slap in the face. (ABC News: Charlie Mclean, Kelsey Reid)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Cooper today issued a strong rebuke of the decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This decision is a slap in the face. It allows Woodside to continue operations and pollution to 2070. It is a crime against Murujuga and a crime against humanity,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This is not just destroying Murujuga country, but will impact communities all around the world. It is a shameful act and a shameful decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It is a betrayal of Aboriginal people, it is a betrayal of our Elders, it is a betrayal of future generations.
