{"id":137982,"date":"2025-09-12T15:34:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T15:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/137982\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T15:34:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T15:34:10","slug":"university-of-sydney-partners-with-siemens-healthineers-for-9m-mri-research-capability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/137982\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Sydney partners with Siemens Healthineers for 9M MRI research capability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/science\/about\/our-people\/academic-staff\/sharon-naismith.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sharon Naismith<\/a> is a clinical neuropsychologist in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/content\/corporate\/science\/schools\/school-of-psychology.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">School of Psychology<\/a> and heads the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/content\/corporate\/brain-mind\/our-research\/ageing-and-neurodegeneration\/alzheimers-and-neurodegeneration\/healthy-brain-ageing.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Healthy Brain Ageing Program<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/content\/corporate\/brain-mind\/home.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brain and Mind Centre<\/a>, a one-of-its kind intervention research clinic for dementia.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Naismith will be one of the first researchers to have access to the new scanner.<\/p>\n<p>The new 3T MRI scanner features powerful gradient technology, enabling faster, sharper, and more detailed imaging. This allows researchers to map the brain in fine detail, detect disease markers earlier, and study heart and musculoskeletal conditions with unprecedented clarity.<\/p>\n<p>These new perspectives support the development of new treatments and diagnostics, and ensure discoveries can move more quickly out of the lab and into clinical care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn older adults showing early signs of dementia, sleep problems are common,\u201d said Professor Naismith. \u201cThese sleep changes may be linked to early damage in a small part of the brainstem called the locus coeruleus, which controls an important brain chemical called noradrenaline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil now, it has been hard to study this part of the brain in people with early dementia.
