Posting on their website, GOV.UK states driving under the influence of certain prescription medicines can be just as serious as illegal drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Greg Wilson, founder of car insurance experts at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.quotezone.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Quotezone.co.ukLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Quotezone.co.uk<\/a> said motorists taking opioid painkillers, tranquillisers or antidepressants could be impacted by the law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If they are found to be under the influence of these <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/medicines\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"medsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">meds<\/a>, the expert said motorists will be recommended to \u201cavoid driving\u201d even if the medications have been prescribed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Although the<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/drugs\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" drugsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> drugs<\/a> are legal to take, they could be impairing<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/motoring-news\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" motoristsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> motorists<\/a> ability to drive and motorists must speak with their GP before getting behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Greg added: \u201cIf you are on strong medications, it is likely that you will be recommended to avoid driving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Opioid painkillers, tranquillisers, and certain antidepressants are examples of medicines that can affect driving ability \u2013 as well as those that cause drowsiness or say \u2018do not operate heavy machinery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">GOV.UK stressed there was a much bigger list of potential medications and drugs that could become a serious issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They warned that anyone prescribed amphetamines such as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/drugs\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"dexamphetamineLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dexamphetamine<\/a> or selegiline should also speak to a health professional before driving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They also warn that those on clonazepam, diazepam, flunitrazepam, and lorazepam could also be affected. Penalties for drug driving include a minimum one-year driving ban and an unlimited fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Officials stress that a conviction for drug driving would also lead to a significant increase in car insurance costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Road safety campaigners at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brake.org.uk\/get-involved\/take-action\/mybrake\/knowledge-centre\/drug-driving\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"BrakeLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brake<\/a> previously wrote: \u201cMany prescription and over-the-counter medications impair ability to drive safely, for instance causing drowsiness, affecting reaction times, coordination, concentration or vision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWarnings on medication can be vague or in small print only. They may indicate there is a risk of impairment but not relate it to driving.
