We will try to repeat on Sunday. It’s been a tough three weeks.”

Vingegaard (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) finished safely in the bunch after picking up an unexpected 4 bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint in Salamanca, 60km from the finish, as main rival Almeida was caught napping.

Saturday’s penultimate stage is a brutal mountainous route featuring more than 4,000m of climbing, offering the last realistic chance for Almeida to catch Vingegaard.

Reuters

Australia’s Jai Hindley is still in contention to finish on the podium at the Vuelta a España ahead…

[569
64,63,784,67721,95213,6495,85,39562
0":"post-138856","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-cycling","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-cycling","11":"tag-jasper-philipsen","12":"tag-jay-hindley","13":"tag-jonas-vingegaard","14":"tag-sports","15":"tag-vuelta-a-espana
["GET
