West Australians planning to visit South-East Asia are being urged to get vaccinated against measles after two more cases were linked with travel to Bali.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The state has now recorded 35 cases of measles this year, prompting warnings from health officials for people to ensure they are protected ahead of the upcoming school holidays.\u00a0<\/p>\n

An outbreak was declared in Far North Queensland on Thursday<\/a>, with the latest case there also linked with travel to Bali.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Saturday, WA Health confirmed the two new cases detected in WA had visited multiple locations in Perth, including shopping centres and the airport, while infectious.<\/p>\n

Cairns measles outbreak<\/a><\/p>\n

Health officials in Cairns publish a list of potential measles exposure sites after a locally acquired case of the illness.<\/p>\n

Anyone who visited these locations<\/a> is being urged to monitor for symptoms.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It comes after WA Health issued an alert on August 27 after measles was detected in three travellers returning to WA from Bali.<\/p>\n

It means the virus has now been detected in five travellers returning to Perth from the popular holiday destination between July and September.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But authorities are also worried about local transmission, with 10 of the 15 cases detected in WA during this period having being locally acquired.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Staff at a mine site were forced into isolation in July after two people with measles visited the Pilbara region<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The state’s tally of 35 measles cases so far in 2025 is almost six times higher than the six cases recorded in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Clare Huppatz from WA Health said although measles was rare in Australia, some countries were experiencing large outbreaks of the disease.<\/p>\n

“There is an ongoing risk of measles being brought into WA from overseas, especially from popular holiday destinations such as South-East Asia,” she said.<\/p>\n

“We are fortunate to have the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine which is extremely effective and free to all Western Australians.”<\/p>\n

Anyone planning to travel overseas should ensure their jabs are up to date, with vaccination recommended at least two weeks prior to departure.<\/p>\n

WA Health has also recently expanded the state-funded immunisation program to include an MMR vaccine for infants aged between six and 11 months who are travelling to high-risk countries.<\/p>\n
