Australian sprinter Torrie Lewis has broken her own national record to race into the 100m semifinals on night one of the 2025 World Athletics Championships.<\/p>\n

The 20-year-old ran 11.08 a superb, finishing third in her heat to qualify automatically<\/a> for Sunday’s semifinal.<\/p>\n

“I’m really happy. I’m very satisfied with this and excited for tomorrow,” Lewis told ABC Sport in Tokyo.<\/p>\n

“I know it probably sounds a bit cocky \u2026 but my times in training indicated that I could [break the national record].<\/p>\n

“I just needed to come out here and get rid of the nerves and do what I’ve been doing in training.”<\/p>\n

There was heartbreak for Rohan Browning though, who missed out on a spot in the men’s semis by just 0.008 seconds<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Jess Hull and Linden Hall both did enough to comfortably qualify for the women’s 1,500m semifinal, also set to take place on Sunday, but Sarah Billings narrowly missed out.<\/p>\n

Lauren Ryan, meanwhile, finished in ninth place in the women’s 10,000m<\/a>, the best result for an Australian in that event since Benita Willis \u00a0finished in 8th in 2003 at the Stade de France in Paris.<\/p>\n

Her compatriot Izzi Batt-Doyle came home in 17th.<\/p>\n

Kurtis Marschall had to battle to qualify for the men’s pole vault final<\/a>, knocking the bar off at his first attempt at 5.70m before clearing that and the subsequent height of 5.75m.<\/p>\n

“Making the final is such a relief,” Marschall told ABC Sport.<\/p>\n

“The qualifying is the final. You have to go out there and have to jump every bar and be your best self just to be the final.”<\/p>\n

Chaos and heartbreak for New Zealand\"Geordie<\/p>\n

Earlier, New Zealand runner Geordie Beamish had a fortunate escape when he qualified for the 3,000m steeple chase despite falling heavily on the penultimate lap<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old world indoor champion rolled, picked himself up and finished second in his heat, bowing to the crowd as he finished.<\/p>\n

“I took a good roll,” Beamish told World Athletics.<\/p>\n

“I couldn’t think for about 20 seconds and then I got up and said to myself that I need to keep going.<\/p>\n

“The rest of the field didn’t get far away and to be honest, I was pretty confident that I could catch them.”<\/p>\n

There was heartbreak though for Kiwi shot putter Tom Walsh, who missed a medal on countback.<\/p>\n

Oh that is desperate for Browning.<\/p>\n

He has missed out by a fraction of a second.<\/p>\n

Elvis Afrifa ran 10.15 in finishing fourth in that seventh and final heat, pushing Browning out of the final qualification spot.<\/p>\n

It was 0.008 seconds that he missed out by.<\/p>\n

Puripol Boonson just got past Browning on the line in his heat and that is what has cost him a chance at the semis.<\/p>\n

Rohan Browning spoke to ABC Sport’s David Mark.<\/p>\n

He sounded pretty disappointed.<\/p>\n

“I think I got out well. I was happy with that. The top end went a little bit missing, maybe I rushed through the acceleration a little bit,” he says.<\/p>\n

“Today’s result isn’t definitive for my year, I’ve had my best year. It’s hard to put it all together for one competition at the end of the year, but that’s what we signed up for, that’s the sport.”<\/p>\n

He may, of course, still have a race to run tomorrow if he’s very lucky with the timings in his last heat…<\/p>\n
