(Supplied: T Bock)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The giveaway to finding these illegal nets is \u2026 a piece of string that&#8217;s coming out of the water and attaching to a tree or a stake on the riverbank,&#8221; Mr Williams told ABC Statewide Drive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And because they are set under the water, once a platypus or rakali [water rat] go inside, they find it very difficult to find the exit again \u2026 and consequently, within two or three minutes they drown.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Williams said platypus were officially considered vulnerable in many areas of Victoria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Any death that is caused by traps or other illegal activities can knock a big hole in the population, and because platypuses can travel quite long distances, a trap set in one place can potentially kill several in a night.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"platypus swimming in water\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/5a8c213a5d9c3db928ab2ef2b395e26c\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The platypus is considered vulnerable in parts of Victoria.
