{"id":143871,"date":"2025-09-15T01:49:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T01:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/143871\/"},"modified":"2025-09-15T01:49:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T01:49:09","slug":"spacex-launches-northrop-grummans-biggest-ever-cargo-spacecraft-on-its-1st-mission-to-the-iss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/143871\/","title":{"rendered":"SpaceX launches Northrop Grumman&#8217;s biggest-ever cargo spacecraft on its 1st mission to the ISS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"808b8cc8-925d-46a6-93fa-0efc878260d4\">SpaceX launched Northrop Grumman&#8217;s new &#8220;Cygnus XL&#8221; cargo ship on its debut mission to the International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday evening (Sept. 14).<\/p>\n<p>A <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon 9<\/a> rocket carrying the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/cygnus-spacecraft.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/cygnus-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cygnus<\/a> freighter lifted off from Florida&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33926-cape-canaveral.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33926-cape-canaveral.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Canaveral Space Force Station<\/a> at 6:11 p.m. EDT (2211 GMT).<\/p>\n<p>The mission is known as NG-23, because it is the 23rd cargo effort that Northrop Grumman flies to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the ISS<\/a> for NASA. Then, in late March, NASA announced that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/nasa-cancels-cargo-launch-to-iss-due-to-damaged-cygnus-spacecraft\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/nasa-cancels-cargo-launch-to-iss-due-to-damaged-cygnus-spacecraft\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NG-22 had been called off<\/a>, as a result of damage the Cygnus incurred during transport to the launch site.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"e6685f7c-0c27-412e-9d12-5d9dd6f8171e-1\">NG-23 marks the debut of the Cygnus XL, a larger and more capable version of the veteran freighter. The previous iteration hauled about 8,500 (3,855 kilograms) pounds of cargo to the ISS, but Cygnus XL is taking 11,000 pounds (4,990 kg) up on this trip.<\/p>\n<p>Among the supplies packed aboard the freighter are &#8220;materials to produce semiconductor crystals in space and equipment to develop improvements for cryogenic fuel tanks,&#8221; NASA officials <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-sets-coverage-for-northrop-grumman-crs-23-spacex-falcon-9-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-sets-coverage-for-northrop-grumman-crs-23-spacex-falcon-9-launch\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote in a statement<\/a>. &#8220;The spacecraft also will deliver a specialized UV light system to prevent the growth of microbe communities that form in water systems and supplies to produce pharmaceutical crystals that could treat cancer and other diseases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NG-23&#8217;s Cygnus XL \u2014 which Northrop Grumman named S.S. William &#8220;Willie&#8221; McCool after one of the NASA astronauts who died in the 2003 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19436-columbia-disaster.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19436-columbia-disaster.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space shuttle Columbia accident<\/a> \u2014 is scheduled to arrive at the ISS on Wednesday (Sept. 17) at 6:35 a.m. EDT (1035 GMT). (Image credit: NASA\/SpaceX)<\/p>\n<p id=\"5267d538-9caa-400c-a161-2f781de9de93\">The NG-23 Cygnus will stay attached to the orbiting lab until March 2026, when it will depart to burn up in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s Progress freighter \u2014 one of which <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/russia-progress-93-spacecraft-arrives-international-space-station\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/russia-progress-93-spacecraft-arrives-international-space-station\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">just arrived at the ISS<\/a> on Saturday (Sept. 13) \u2014 is similarly disposable, but the third currently operational ISS cargo craft, SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18852-spacex-dragon.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18852-spacex-dragon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dragon<\/a> capsule, is different.
