A central figure in the creation of the Adelaide Crows<\/a>, Max Basheer, has died aged 98.<\/p>\n

The Adelaide Crows and AFL led the tributes for the Australian Football Hall of Famer<\/a>, who died overnight in Adelaide. <\/p>\n

Basheer was a vital player in ensuring the financial stability and foundations of football in South Australia, surviving every crisis period thrown in the league’s direction. <\/p>\n

One of his most remarkable achievements was winning the fight to ensure the Adelaide Crows could be a team in the top flight in 1990. <\/p>\n

A 60-year stint with the SANFL saw Basheer become the organisation’s longest-serving president, having held the job from 1990 until 2003.<\/p>\n

Within his time working at the organisation, he also held the roles of commissioner and vice-president. <\/p>\n

His services to the game saw him made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1988. Basheer was later inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2005. <\/p>\n

Basheer was then named as a selector for the Australian Football Hall of Fame and South Australian Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

The home stadium of the Crows, Adelaide Oval, also has a stand named in his honour.<\/p>\n

Basheer was the first-ever number one ticketholder for the Crows, earning life membership with the club in 2003. <\/p>\n

“Adelaide Football Club would not exist if not for the determination, resilience and tireless work of Max Basheer,” Crows chairman John Olsen said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“He was a visionary, a passionate South Australian and a man of integrity, who always had the best interests of football in this state at heart.<\/p>\n

“Our club, and the broader football community, owe a great deal to Max and the service he gave over many decades.”<\/p>\n

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon extended his condolences to Basheer’s family.<\/p>\n

“Max’s foremost priority was the health and strength of SA football, at all levels of the game, both on-field and off-field,” Dillon said.<\/p>\n

“He gave more than six decades to leadership roles in the game and worked relentlessly to ensure SA football could stand on its own two feet … he protected the interests of SA football, and all of its clubs in the state.”<\/p>\n
