Chang\u2019s China Bistro has agreed to pay $80,000 to a man who said he was not hired at the chain\u2019s Birmingham restaurant because he requested Sundays off as a religious accommodation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LC52LTGY2NFPRBHYCJ4UNQKN7I\">The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced the settlement Monday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QFOGVWR3H5BMBNUIM3T42CF45Q\">According to the EEOC\u2019s charge investigation, the incident happened when the man interviewed at the restaurant in August 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"65VJRQNCAFBCLLEDN2KWHZHFZY\">The applicant requested Sundays off because of his religious beliefs, and the investigation concluded he was not hired because of this. This would violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IEVKKLOMJJH4DG36ATF5PWZ65M\">According to the settlement, P.F. Chang\u2019s will provide back pay, compensatory and punitive damages, and revise written policies and procedures about religious accommodations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MRNZOE43ANHWVOYBJMGPGHNRZA\">The restaurant also agreed to require training for its Birmingham employees, supervisors, managers and human resources workers on equal employment opportunity rights and responsibilities, with an emphasis on religious accommodations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C3PQ7JF6MJBORKOFMOQD2MONII\">Bradley Anderson, director of the EEOC\u2019s Birmingham District Office, said the case should serve as a reminder to employers to recognize requests for religious accommodations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6EFSNFG6IJFIZCOEFKZ2ZQQV7I\">\u201cWe commend P.F. Chang\u2019s for their commitment to ensuring that their restaurants make reasonable efforts to accommodate employees\u2019 sincerely held religious beliefs,\u201d Anderson said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7YX77O2ZMZB27MVFOZ4QBVIOMI\">\u201cIt is important all employers understand that federal law requires reasonable religious accommodations, unless such an accommodation would pose an undue hardship substantial to the overall context of the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
