{"id":145937,"date":"2025-09-15T22:17:20","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T22:17:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/145937\/"},"modified":"2025-09-15T22:17:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T22:17:20","slug":"starving-wallabies-at-the-briars-spark-urgent-mornington-peninsula-shire-council-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/145937\/","title":{"rendered":"Starving wallabies at The Briars spark urgent Mornington Peninsula Shire council meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An urgent council meeting has been called after wallabies were found to be starving at a wildlife sanctuary on Victoria&#8217;s Mornington Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dead wallabies have been found over several months at The Briars nature reserve in Mount Martha \u2014 known by traditional owners as Tichin-Gorourke \u2014 which is home to native flora and fauna including koalas, emu, echidnas, bandicoots and powerful owls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A study into the deaths commissioned by the Mornington Peninsula Shire council revealed that abundant rain over the past year had fuelled grass growth and an explosion in the sanctuary&#8217;s wallaby population, according to the council&#8217;s mayor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The University of Melbourne study reportedly found there were about 150 wallabies at The Briars but the reserve could sustain only around 30.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a wallaby in a nature reserve \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6552d444bf3b427726304776af211f7a\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">High rainfall and grass growth have led to an overpopulation of wallabies at The Briars.
