Company CEO Sassie Duggleby said bringing Melroy onboard was an easy decision. &#8220;Her career has run the gamut of all the areas that we&#8217;re trying to hit. (Image credit: Venus Aerospace)<a id=\"elk-a87c5882-13e7-4a2b-9657-7e73c9ef166a\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What is the RDRE?<\/p>\n<p id=\"bf9f1d8c-2825-4b96-aad2-6416c2c2607a\">Melroy told Space.com that she first encountered the idea of RDREs a decade ago while at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29273-what-is-darpa.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29273-what-is-darpa.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DARPA<\/a>, when a breakthrough always seemed just out of reach. &#8220;It was one of those technologies that has always seemed elusive,&#8221; Melroy said, adding that &#8220;it was the classic joke: &#8216;it&#8217;s always about 10 years away.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What sets the RDRE aside from your everyday rocket engine is the way fuel ignites inside the combustion chamber. Conventional engines burn fuel in a steady process, where the flame front (the area at which combustion occurs) moves smoothly through a propellant mixture to produce continuous thrust. RDREs use a detonation wave that races around a circular channel, which produces short, high-pressure bursts that drive up thrust and efficiency. So, instead of a smooth output of flame, the engine runs on a continuous series of controlled explosions.<\/p>\n<p>The concept has been studied <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gdilab.engin.umich.edu\/rotating-detonation-engines\/#:~:text=first%20theorized%20in%201950%E2%80%99s\" data-url=\"https:\/\/gdilab.engin.umich.edu\/rotating-detonation-engines\/#:~:text=first%20theorized%20in%201950%E2%80%99s\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">since the 1950s<\/a>, but engineers struggled to stabilize the detonation long enough for flight. &#8220;Most rocket engines flying today are based on 1960s and 1970s technology,&#8221; Melroy said. &#8220;The efficiency jump of RDREs is really a game changer for launch and for other applications.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Venus claims their RDRE technology offers a 15% increase in efficiency versus conventional rockets, enough to nearly quadruple payload capacity when compared to legacy engines, according to Duggleby.<\/p>\n<p>The technology a joke no longer, Melroy said, &#8220;They&#8217;ve done it. (Image credit: Venus Aerospace)<a id=\"elk-fc44bbc2-7494-44eb-bf9c-59dd5e1f3c13\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>How did Venus Aerospace do it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"418d0a4b-654e-4330-a6be-992703eecd09\">The decades-old technological riddle was finally solved thanks to three major advances, according to Duggleby.<\/p>\n<p>First, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/metal-3d-printing\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/metal-3d-printing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3D metal printing<\/a> allowed Venus to innovate quickly, by creating an environment where the company could learn from its failures and make fast changes. Duggleby said their innovative speed was increased further by the decision she and her spouse, Andrew Duggleby \u2014 Venus co-founder and CTO \u2014 made to move the company from Southern California to the Houston Spaceport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We design, manufacture and test all in one single location within 100 yards of each other,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That has allowed us to innovate quickly.&#8221; Duggleby said Venus&#8217; current record stands at eight engine tests in a day, and 28 engine tests in a week. Over the last five years, she said, has made Venus&#8217; program, &#8220;as far as we know, the fastest new engine development in history.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The second component making Venus&#8217; RDRE breakthrough possible was a high-speed camera. According to Duggleby, Venus engineers used a camera shooting at 1 million frames per second to slow down the RDRE ignition process and observe the engine&#8217;s detonation sequence in as much detail as possible. &#8220;Trying to understand how you can get sustained detonation has been key,&#8221; Duggleby explained.<\/p>\n<p>The third breakthrough is for aspiring RDRE competitors to find out for themselves. &#8220;I&#8217;m going to hold on what the third one is, because I don&#8217;t know that I want it public,&#8221; Duggleby said, but added, &#8220;there was one more innovation that we used.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ZiW7FBebpUTxppf59BZpLD.gif\" alt=\"Venus Aerospace tests their revolutionary rotating detonation rocket engine\" loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ZiW7FBebpUTxppf59BZpLD.gif\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ZiW7FBebpUTxppf59BZpLD.gif\"\/><\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Venus Aerospace)<\/p>\n<p id=\"9c50002a-1656-4ef0-8e34-a55b80129b5c\">After proving their concept works with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/technology\/venus-aerospace-debuts-potentially-revolutionary-rocket-engine-with-landmark-1st-flight-video\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/technology\/venus-aerospace-debuts-potentially-revolutionary-rocket-engine-with-landmark-1st-flight-video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the successful test launch in May<\/a>, Venus is now focusing on applications for the new engine technology.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The engine is proven. It&#8217;s ready to go,&#8221; Duggleby said. &#8220;There aren&#8217;t more milestones that we need to go hit to start doing some integration with our existing customers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The company is now working to integrate the RDRE into real-world systems for buyers in the defense, civil and commercial space industries \u2014 Melroy&#8217;s specialty. &#8220;All three areas are areas that I&#8217;m familiar with,&#8221; she said. &#8220;So, ideally, I can help [Venus] as they scale. I think this is a pivotal time for them, so I&#8217;m going to make myself very much available.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Melroy said propulsion integration will be the main challenge ahead, but that May&#8217;s test shows that Venus knows the path: &#8220;It&#8217;s just a matter of getting the right size, scale, and then the integration to go on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-b03eaced-c4f7-466f-8304-6f6ff49facb1\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>San Francisco to Tokyo in two hours?<\/p>\n<p id=\"9c825cd8-38dd-442d-bcce-dd1d4c49334b\">Venus sees a range of applications for its RDRE as diverse as its customer base. Duggleby said Venus&#8217; &#8220;North Star,&#8221; one of its most lofty goals, is high-speed global travel, asking, &#8220;How does the world change if you can get from San Francisco to Tokyo in two hours?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Focused on that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15567-north-star-polaris.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15567-north-star-polaris.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Star<\/a>, one of Venus&#8217; long-term goals is the Stargazer M4, a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.venusaero.com\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.venusaero.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mach 4 passenger jet<\/a> designed for record fast point-to-point global travel. Its design pairs the RDRE with the Venus Detonation Ramjet (VDR), an air-breathing engine built for sustained hypersonic flight.<\/p>\n<p>The trajectory puts Venus in a different category than most of its perceivable peers. Over the past decade, several rocket startups have struggled to move beyond prototypes, while a handful have managed to scale into reliable launch providers. Venus, by contrast, is focused on propulsion rather than whole launch vehicles, and has already achieved a technical milestone that no competitor can yet claim. &#8220;We flew the first ever high-thrust RDRE,&#8221; Duggleby said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know that there&#8217;s an actual comparison right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Duggleby envisions different versions of Venus&#8217; engines flying low in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>, or all the way into deep space. &#8220;We believe in a future where this is the engine powering everything from launch vehicles to orbital transfer vehicles to landers,&#8221; Duggleby said. &#8220;There&#8217;s also,&#8221; she added, &#8220;near term applications for munitions.&#8221; That would be the &#8220;defense&#8221; portion of Venus&#8217; industry-changing holy trio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:51.77%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/CgAmNA98oZnJGgxCfGSqD9.jpg\" alt=\"Venus Aerospace tests their revolutionary rotating detonation rocket engine\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/CgAmNA98oZnJGgxCfGSqD9.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/CgAmNA98oZnJGgxCfGSqD9.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Venus Aerospace&#8217;s RDRE and VDR. (Image credit: Venus Aerospace)<\/p>\n<p id=\"8d4ab3fe-5688-4ea0-8eb0-c1d604849fd0\">Launch and orbital transfer vehicles that can push vessels into deep space are RDRE applications where efficiency could directly cut costs and boost capacity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the things we really learned from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a> is how much logistics people and their science need,&#8221; Melroy said. &#8220;I think we&#8217;re going to be seeing a lot more orbital transfer vehicles. You can see that&#8217;s becoming a big thing in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> orbit, but I think it&#8217;s going to be a very logical outcome of [sending] cargo to the cislunar environment,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Melroy also pointed to landers as another application.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-6191d52b-a4d6-482b-b53c-710bfc2ef0f4\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>RDREs on the moon and Mars<\/p>\n<p id=\"ca94f67e-20e9-4428-b91c-53bd517ab641\">NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis program<\/a> is the agency&#8217;s first endeavor to land astronauts on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> since Apollo. The program&#8217;s current architecture utilizes SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starship<\/a> as the lunar lander for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 3<\/a>, slated for sometime in 2027. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> is making progress with the vehicle&#8217;s development following a successful test launch in August, but still has a number of technological milestones to complete before<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> NASA<\/a> clears the spacecraft to land crews on the moon.<\/p>\n<p>Starship&#8217;s powerful Raptor engines are fueled by liquid oxygen and liquid methane \u2014 both of which require cryogenic cooling to maintain their liquid states, and will need to be transferred between vehicles for refueling in order to reach any destination beyond <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a> (LEO). Additionally, even with proper temperature regulation, both propellants will experience supply losses due to boil-off. SpaceX has yet to demonstrate a solution to either, whereas RDREs don&#8217;t need cryogenic propellants or, as Melroy noted, large engine bells at their base, making them well-suited for moon and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> operations.<\/p>\n<p>Melroy added that propulsion breakthroughs like the RDRE are going to set the pace for global space competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mFpUxBwrygNRG4RvWFQW4A.jpg\" alt=\"Venus Aerospace tests their revolutionary rotating detonation rocket engine\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mFpUxBwrygNRG4RvWFQW4A.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mFpUxBwrygNRG4RvWFQW4A.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Venus Aerospace test vehicle. Others are watching,&#8221; she said. &#8220;They&#8217;re trying to build their own commercial space industry \u2026 Protecting our lead with this very innovative propulsion technology will have a huge economic impact for the United States.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She argued RDREs could &#8220;supercharge the growth of the space industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For Venus, that sentiment is fueling interest from across the sector \u2014 pushing the startup to scale quickly.
