He used a small hook to untangle the snake from long grass before picking it up and placing it in a bag.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey (Collett\u2019s snakes) are part of the black snake genus and are highly venomous,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are usually considered pretty placid but will still bite if they feel threatened.\u201d<\/p>\n
Related stories: Fighting snakes fall off library roof<\/a> and Next-level home security: stubborn snake on patrol<\/a><\/p>\n Mr Fuller said it was unusual find.<\/p>\n \u201cThey are generally found in central (western) Queensland,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen we find a snake that isn\u2019t from around here, it\u2019s almost always a lost pet or a stowaway that has caught a car ride.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not often that a snake gets this far out of its natural habitat without some help from a human.\u201d<\/p>\n He said they find a couple of pet snakes each year.<\/p>\n \u201cUsually we will get sent a photo of a snake that has slithered into someone\u2019s yard and can see if it\u2019s a snake not found in the area,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cBut if it\u2019s a lost pet from a snake species that can be found in the area it can be more difficult to impossible to know if it\u2019s a pet or not, especially when it comes to coastal carpet pythons.\u201d<\/p>\n He said snakes found it difficult to survive in unfamiliar territory.<\/p>\n \u201cIt depends on the snake species and the new area they find themselves in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt might be too cold or too warm compared to what they are used to, they might struggle to find food, shelter and water, and they have to worry about predators.\u201d<\/p>\n The Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation is reviewing the discovery of the Collett\u2019s snake.<\/p>\n \u201cThe department is investigating a report of a suspected escaped pet\u00a0snake\u00a0on Bribie Island,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe snake was captured and is in possession of licensed snake catchers, who are assisting the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n It is illegal to keep a native\u00a0snake\u00a0without a permit, with a maximum penalty of $16,630.<\/p>\n A Specialised or Advanced licence is required to keep dangerous\u00a0snakes in Queensland.<\/p>\n Permit holders are required to report any deaths or escapes of animals under their care to the department and failure to keep animals in accordance with licence conditions can result in significant penalties and licences being revoked.<\/p>\n Mr Fuller urged people who can\u2019t look after their pet snake any more to hand them to the RSPCA or to someone within snake-keeping communities.<\/p>\n \u201cYou just need to make sure both of you have your licences up to date,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SCN160925-colletts-snake-2.jpg\")
