In light of the ongoing Kawhi Leonard investigation, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said today the league may revisit policies that led Clippers owner Steve Ballmer<\/a> to invest in the same company that reportedly gave Leonard a no-show job.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a Front Office Sports conference in New York, Silver said, \u201cWhen this concludes, we\u2019ll take a fresh look at our rules in terms of companies that players are investing in and owners [at the same time]. We have rules now \u2014 I mean, we have lines \u2014 but there\u2019s not a complete prohibition. It\u2019s based on the amount each owns in those entities, but the values are getting much higher or the world\u2019s getting more complicated. Those are things that we\u2019re going to look at.”<\/p>\n

As of now, Silver said if an owner has an investment of over 5% in a company, \u201cthere\u2019s an absolute preclusion to a player investing.\u201d Because of Ballmer\u2019s $60M investment with the now bankrupt company Aspiration \u2014 bringing accusations that he funded Leonard\u2019s $28M contract and $20M more he was owed in stock \u2014 the issue is under scrutiny. <\/p>\n

\u201cAt least up till now, the greatest complaints have come from a combination of players and owners who don\u2019t like the fact that the league has placed limitations on companies that they can both be investing in because it feels unfair,\u201d Silver said. \u201c\u2026So you have players saying, \u2018That\u2019s unfair. That\u2019s something I want to invest in.\u2019 And you have players who are in deals and owners saying, \u2018Wait a second, it\u2019s a big world. Everybody\u2019s investing in these companies just because I own this NBA team.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that\u2019s been historically, we\u2019ve gotten complaints there\u2026. we may have to rethink those rules and think maybe there are even additional lines because, look, I accept my responsibility ultimately is the integrity of this league.”<\/p>\n

Silver said there is no timetable for the current league investigation, which is being led by the law firm of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis investigation will take time,\u201d he said. \u201cI mean, we want to be as completely thorough as possible and it\u2019s my sense from being involved in these things in the past, we will get to the bottom of this. These are real people out there who did whatever deals they did. My sense is that we will bring whatever resources we need to bear on this investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just because Steve Ballmer\u2019s an owner in the league. I\u2019d be saying this about anybody who\u2019s accused of anything. I\u2019m a lawyer. I believe in due process. I believe in fairness.
