MERSING \u2013 The authorities have arrested three men after the carcass of a Malayan tiger, believed to have been illegally hunted, was found in a vehicle during a raid at Felda Tenggaroh in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
The joint operation, code-named Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah, was carried out by Bukit Aman Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) intelligence officers together with the Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan).<\/p>\n
Acting on public tip-offs, the team searched a multi-purpose vehicle and discovered the carcass of the protected animal.<\/p>\n
Three men aged 28 to 49 were arrested after failing to produce a special permit to possess or keep the fully protected species.<\/p>\n
FRU\u2019s commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner Rosli Md Yusof, said the operation highlighted the importance of the unit\u2019s intelligence work in tackling wildlife crimes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Malayan tiger is a priceless national treasure. Its loss due to human greed is a betrayal of our heritage.<\/p>\n
\u201cFRU intelligence will remain at the forefront, working hand in hand with partner agencies to protect our national heritage.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are committed to combating illegal hunting without compromise, as this is our duty to ensure sustainability for future generations,\u201d he said in a statement on Sept 16.<\/p>\n
He added that they seized the tiger carcass, vehicle and four mobile phones.<\/p>\n
All suspects and seized items were taken to the Mersing district police headquarters for documentation and further action under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.<\/p>\n
The tiger was found with severe injuries, possibly from a trap, and six gunshot wounds to the head, believed to have caused its death.<\/p>\n
The three suspects are being held in remand by Johor Perhilitan to help with investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 70 of the Act for keeping wildlife without a special permit.<\/p>\n
The authorities have warned that stern action will be taken against anyone involved in illegal hunting or wildlife trafficking. THE STAR\/ASIA NEWS NETWORK<\/p>\n
