The fate of the Tasmanian Devils is up in the air after a report from the Tasmanian Planning Commission recommended against a new stadium being built<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But respected broadcaster Gerard Whateley believes there\u2019s a \u201clegitimate chance\u201d a stadium is built without a roof to cut up to $300 million in costs. <\/p>\n

A roofed stadium is a condition from the AFL to grant the Devils the league\u2019s 19th license ahead of their planned entry into the competition in 2028.<\/p>\n

The state\u2019s planning commission on Wednesday released its final report into the \u201cmonolithic\u201d $945 million Macquarie Point venue, estimating costs could blow out to $1.8 billion. <\/p>\n

Despite this, Tasmanian premier Jeremy Rockliff said they\u2019re not bound by the report and a vote in parliament would determine whether the project goes ahead.<\/p>\n

Fox Footy AFL 360 co-host Whateley forecasted \u201cfive possible outcomes\u201d on where things go from here.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe stadium gets built,\u201d he began on Wednesday night\u2019s program. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s compromised and the stadium gets built without a roof and they save $200-300 million, which is not to be sneezed at. <\/p>\n

\u201cIs there an alternative if this is not seen as not the answer? <\/p>\n

\u201cWould the AFL allow the team to have its license without the stadium, which we know is a condition for the time being.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr it all gets scrapped and there\u2019s a day the AFL announces the Tasmania team won\u2019t go ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whateley believes the Devils will ultimately enter the competition as planned. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a legitimate chance the stadium gets built without a roof as a compromise. I also think in my heart, there won\u2019t be a day where the AFL cancels the license,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo if everything goes awry, I still think the team will play.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has confirmed his interest in the Devils\u2019 coaching role<\/a>, should it be offered to him, after going deep in Melbourne\u2019s search.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. The answer is yes, and I probably wasn\u2019t there until the Melbourne process, ironically,\u201d Buckley told SEN on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sitting here saying \u2018I assume that \u2026 I expect that\u2019. This is all open, spit balling, sharing more than a normal candidate would because they don\u2019t have a microphone in front of them every second day, and I\u2019m trying to be as respectful to those processes as I possibly can.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne, I\u2019ve determined that I\u2019d love to coach again. If Tassie feel that I\u2019m a fit, then I\u2019ll be there, but that\u2019s up to them to work out.
