A Canberra man has been charged with murder after a fight at a caravan park in the city’s south on Monday.<\/p>\n
Paul Bruce Bray, 49, called police himself to say a man was lying unconscious at the front door of his residence at the Southside Village Caravan Park.<\/p>\n
The victim, 34-year-old Matthew McGrail, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, but died today from his injuries.<\/p>\n
Mr Bray was arrested at the scene, and appeared in court on Tuesday charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.<\/p>\n

The court heard Mr Bray told police it was self-defence.<\/p>\n
He was granted bail and released.<\/p>\n
The ACT’s Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker told the court at the time, “It’s not clear in the facts if the [victim] will get better or worse”.<\/p>\n
‘Seems to be a one-on-one situation’<\/p>\n
Today, ACT Policing’s Detective Inspector Matt Innes revealed Mr McGrail died of his injuries at Canberra Hospital this morning.<\/p>\n
Detective Inspector Innes of the Homicide Squad said Mr Bray and Mr McGrail knew one another because they lived at the same caravan park.<\/p>\n

“They \u2026 may have been drinking together, there was a verbal argument, and then [that] subsequently turned physical,” he said.<\/p>\n
“At this stage, we believe there were no weapons involved \u2014 it was just a physical altercation between the two men. It seems to be a one-on-one situation.”<\/p>\n
Detective Inspector Innes said whether the murder involved an element of self-defence, as Mr Bray had previously said, would “absolutely” form part of the investigation.<\/p>\n
“At this time we’re exploring a number of aspects in relation to the case, including discussions of events that took place earlier, prior to the man dying and the altercation taking place on Monday,” he said.<\/p>\n
“We’re currently canvassing for CCTV to build a timeline of events [and] we’re asking anyone who had any interactions with either man prior to the assault to come forward.”<\/p>\n

Detective Inspector Innes said Mr McGrail’s formal cause of death was not yet known.<\/p>\n
Mr Bray made a brief appearance in the ACT Magistrates Court this afternoon by video link.<\/p>\n
He put his head in his hands as his lawyer said there would be no application for bail.<\/p>\n
