MLB wants a salary cap<\/a>, and between now and Dec. 1, 2026, when the current CBA expires, those two words — which owners \u201cregard as a necessity and the MLBPA as a profanity<\/a> — could presage the fate of the 2027 season,\u201d according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.com. Sources confirmed that owners have \u201cnot yet decided whether they will take the biggest run at the implementation of a cap since 1994,\u201d when the union\u2019s refusal to budge on the matter led to the cancellation of the World Series. Players are \u201cpreparing for it, though, and plan to refuse any such entreaties,\u201d regarding a \u201ccontinued pursuit of a cap as a declaration of war.\u201d Passan wrote how much of the \u201crhetoric is pretense and how much is real will reveal itself over the next 14 months.\u201d Both sides have \u201cother pressing priorities for now: MLB is trying to navigate the collapse of the regional-sports-network model<\/a> that for years enriched teams via local television contracts, and the MLBPA is under federal investigation regarding alleged financial malfeasance<\/a>.\u201d Soon enough, the calendar will \u201cbring the sides to the bargaining table and force them to train their attention on the ideological chasm that exists.\u201d As much as MLB \u201cwants a salary cap now,\u201d multiple owners said that they believe the \u201conly real path to one would require missing the 2027 season.\u201d Passan: \u201cIt\u2019s not just the 2027 season that\u2019s at stake.
