\n\t\u201cDexter: Original Sin<\/a>\u201d creator Clyde Phillips has spoken out after the renewal \u2014 and then cancellation \u2014 of the Paramount+ serial killer prequel series.<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite the series getting renewed<\/a> for Season 2 in April, Variety broke the news in August<\/a> that \u201cOriginal Sin\u201d had, in fact, been killed by the streamer.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was a tough phone call that I got that night. They had already picked up the show, and I\u2019d informed all the writers and informed all the actors, and then they un-picked it up,\u201d Phillips said on the \u201cDissecting Dexter\u201d podcast<\/a>. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t handled well, and I\u2019m not happy about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile the prequel, starring Patrick Gibson as a younger Dexter Morgan, will not return for Season 2, Paramount+ plans to open a writers room for a potential Season 2 of \u201cDexter: Resurrection<\/a>,\u201d Variety reported<\/a> in August.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn the \u201cDissecting Dexter\u201d podcast, Phillips said his plans for the franchise were shaken up by Paramount\u2019s merger with Skydance. Phillips claimed former Paramount boss Chris McCarthy \u201cwanted the \u2018Dexter\u2019-verse to expand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe wanted me to be his new Taylor Sheridan,\u201d Phillips said, referring to the creator of \u201cYellowstone\u201d and its bevy of spinoff series across Paramount+ and CBS. \u201cWe plotted out a couple of years of this, looking forward to introducing new characters,\u201d Phillips added, hinting that he was developing spinoff ideas based on younger versions of James Doakes (Erik King) and Captain Matthews (Geoff Pierson).<\/p>\n

\n\tPhillips also mentioned the \u201cTrinity\u201d spinoff in development, which would be a prequel show centered on the killer played by John Lithgow in the original \u201cDexter.\u201d Phillips said he spent a year in Los Angeles with a writers room and completed 10 scripts of \u201cTrinity,\u201d plus 10 scripts on a project following Dexter\u2019s son Harrison, which would have taken the character in a \u201ccompletely different direction than where he ended up in \u2018Resurrection,\u2019 because Dexter wasn\u2019t involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPhillips said he spent a year \u201cwriting all these shows\u201d and \u201ccreating the [\u2018Dexter\u2019]-verse,\u201d but \u201cthen the merger happened and Paramount had other plans.\u201d Asked if there has been any movement on the \u201cTrinity\u201d series, Phillips said it\u2019s still on the \u201cback-burner\u201d and \u201cI honestly don\u2019t think [Paramount is] going to go for it. I just think think they\u2019re interested in \u2018Resurrection.’\u201d<\/p>\n
