{"id":155065,"date":"2025-09-19T20:10:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-19T20:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/155065\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T20:10:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T20:10:10","slug":"what-we-know-about-the-optus-outage-which-disrupted-triple-zero-calls-resulted-in-three-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/155065\/","title":{"rendered":"What we know about the Optus outage which disrupted triple-zero calls, resulted in three deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s been two days since three people, including an eight-week-old baby, died after a devastating Optus outage caused hundreds of emergency calls to fail, but information about the incident remains scarce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The incident was made public during a snap-media conference on Friday, with the telco blaming a technical fault identified in the process of a network upgrade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Authorities and customers have been left dumbfounded and furious, given Optus was previously reprimanded for a similar outage two years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">So what went wrong and what does it mean for the telco going forward?<\/p>\n<p>What we know<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Optus has provided very little information about Thursday&#8217;s outage, which caused the failure of 600 triple-zero calls across South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Two deaths in SA and one in WA were linked to the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">SA Police said an eight-week-old boy from the town of Gawler and a 68-year-old woman from Queenstown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">What&#8217;s not known is why only triple-zero calls were affected, and why emergency backups did not kick in.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"silhouette picture with optus in background\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/a2f7e168c356ed8b81aa524038377ca5\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Optus says it continues to investigate the cause of the incident.
