Kelvin Gastelum may have missed weight yet again<\/a> last weekend for his middleweight fight with Dustin Stoltzfus at Noche UFC 3, but is the promotion partially at fault?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no secret that Gastelum often has issues making weight. The former Ultimate Fighter winner has always seemed to struggle with this and it\u2019s a big reason why he moved up to middleweight all those years ago. Gastelum did make a successful cut back down to 170 pounds for his 2023 clash with Sean Brady before returning to 185 pounds the following fight. This past weekend Gastelum missed weight as a member of the UFC\u2019s middleweight division for the first time in his career, but it was an alarming five-pound fail<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the end, Gastelum captured a unanimous decision win over Stoltzfus, but did have to cough up $60,000<\/a> in fines.<\/p>\n

Prominent MMA coach, Ray Longo, doesn\u2019t believe all the blame should be thrown at Gastelum for his recent weigh miss. Instead, Longo is partially blaming UFC matchmakers for dragging Gastelum into a fight on short nice and expecting him to come in on weight.<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of the play \u2013 I don\u2019t want to say this \u2013 is the UFC, too,\u201d Longo claimed during a recent appearance on the \u201cAnik & Florian Podcast\u201d<\/a> (via MMA Junkie<\/a>). \u201cThey\u2019re asking a guy on a month\u2019s notice to fight, and it\u2019s the old saying, \u2018You put a gun in a monkey\u2019s hand and he shoots somebody, whose fault is it?\u2019 That\u2019s what they did. They know the guy can\u2019t make the weight, most likely. It\u2019s not in their favor. Go with a guy that is a guaranteed lock.\u201d<\/p>\n

Longo, who has trained fighters in all different weight classes throughout his coaching career, believes Gastelum may have a \u201cserious eating disorder\u201d that he needs to address.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like Kelvin. He\u2019s really been a nice guy from the first day I met him. But I do think he\u2019s got a serious eating disorder,\u201d said Longo. \u201cHe might fall into a category. He\u2019s struggling with something. I believe he\u2019s struggling. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s that he doesn\u2019t care. … You want to believe it\u2019s not just like, \u2018I don\u2019t give a f*ck.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cBut when you sign that agreement \u2013 I really believe this guy struggles with something or his body\u2019s not responding like a normal person. I don\u2019t know. I could be completely wrong. I feel bad for him because it\u2019s not a good look. Don\u2019t sign the agreement if you can\u2019t make the weight.\u201d<\/p>\n
