That show also marked the beginning of the show\u2019s run with host Brent Musburger, former NFL star Irv Cross and 1971\u2019s Miss America Phyllis George, as its cast. On Sunday, CBS will turn back the clocks 50 years to celebrate the show\u2019s anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Musburger, who is the only surviving member of the original trio (George and Cross passed away in 2020 and 2021, respectively, while Jimmy \u201cThe Greek\u201d Snyder, who joined the show in 1976, passed away in 1996), <a href=\"https:\/\/awfulannouncing.com\/cbs\/brent-musburger-returning-nfl-today-anniversary-tribute.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">will appear<\/a> on Sunday\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/09\/19\/cbs-to-celebrate-50th-anniversary-of-the-nfl-today-with-retro-telecast-features\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Josh Carpenter of Sports Business Journal<\/a> also reported that Sunday\u2019s show will include \u201cspecialized graphics, music and even announcer wardrobes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCBS\u2019s crew of Musburger, James Brown, Matt Ryan, Bill Cowher and Nate Burleson will appear from a recreated studio meant to mimic 1975,\u201d Carpenter reported. \u201cShow segments will hearken back to that era, from graphics to music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When CBS announced who will be calling the network\u2019s Week 3 games, the post on X (formerly Twitter) used retro graphics.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It\u2019s NFL Throwback Week on the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NFLonCBS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@NFLonCBS<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Here are the Week 3 Game Announcers <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/saY4wPvGjm\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/saY4wPvGjm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CBS Sports PR (@CBSSportsGang) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSSportsGang\/status\/1967593162635104425?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">September 15, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s episode of CBS Mornings featured a segment commemorating the anniversary of the show. In it, Dana Jacobson talked about the history of the show with its current crew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember it vividly,\u201d Cowher said when asked if he remembered watching it in 1975. \u201cI remember watching the pregame show. I remember sitting there and it coming on at 12 o\u2019clock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI definitely did watch it then, even though basketball was my sport,\u201d Brown added. \u201cBecause it was a groundbreaking show then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one thing I always remember about The NFL Today, it just to me was fascinating to see a player, a broadcaster and a woman and the different viewpoints that they had,\u201d Cowher noted. \u201cAnd I\u2019m thinking, \u2018OK, isn\u2019t that kinda what America\u2019s all about?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a tremendous responsibility,\u201d Burleson said of being on the show. \u201cThe way it was explained to me a long time ago. The seat that we sit in is prime real estate.
