It has an equivalent 200mm focal length, thanks to a tetraprism design that makes light bounce at oblique angles many times, instead of travelling in a straight line. That’s how you get the “length”.

They have a 48 megapixel camera and a sensor that’s 56 per cent bigger than the previous phones, says Apple.

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, says: “iPhone 17 Pro is by far the most powerful iPhone we’ve ever made, with a stunning new design rebuilt from the inside out to maximise performance and deliver an enormous leap in battery life.

“With three 48MP Fusion cameras, a new Centre Stage front camera experience, and pro-level video features, the creative opportunities are endless.”

Camera IconiPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max feature a new design that maximises performance and delivers an enormous leap in battery life. It is laser-welded into a strong and light aluminium body.

+ The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max have three 48MP Fusion cameras — main, ultra wide, and all-new telephoto. Apple says that offers the equivalent of eight lenses, including an 8x zoom — the longest optical-quality zoom ever on iPhone.

+ The 18MP Center Stage front camera is specifically designed for selfies. It offers flexible ways to frame your shot. It has the first square front camera sensor on an iPhone, giving a wide field of view and capturing photos up to 18MP. Photographers no longer have to rotate their iPhone to take a landscape selfie — they can take portrait or landscape photos and videos while holding their iPhone vertically.

+ It has very high quality video, shooting ProRes RAW for those who want super quality.

+ Both phones have the Ceramic Shield 2 front cover and Apple says there is much improved scratch resistance. For the first time, Ceramic Shield protects the back of iPhone, too.

+ iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max come in three finishes — deep blue, cosmic orange and silver.

+ Pre-orders began Friday, September 12, with availability beginning Friday, September 19, 2025.

+ iPhone 17 Pro will be available from 256GB storage, as well as 512GB and 1TB. iPhone 17 Pro Max will be available in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage capacities.

+ iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1999 and iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $2199.

Camera Icon
The Center Stage front camera features a larger, square sensor that allows for high-resolution photos and videos in any orientation — users no longer have to rotate their iPhone to take a landscape selfie.
Credit: Apple/SuppliedA WARNING IN THE AIR

Both the 17 Pro and Pro Max are dual SIM cameras — with a nano SIM card in a slot but also the ability to enable an eSIM.

But among the new cameras is the iPhone 17 Air, which will only work with eSIM. It is the first phone in the world to be set up like this.

The phone does not even have a physical SIM card slot, which has been in iPhones in the US up until iPhone 14.

It moves eSIMs from being a niche addition to “the new normal”.

Sarah McGarr, CEO of international eSIM provider Sim Local, explains: “With eSIMs, you can get connected in minutes without dealing with a tiny SIM card. The challenge is that not every network is ready yet, which can limit people’s options.”

Sarah admits that this shift brings “both opportunities and challenges”:

“Going eSIM-only makes it faster and easier to connect to a network almost anywhere. You can download a plan in minutes without fiddling with a tiny SIM card, which is a huge win for convenience.

“With the iPhone 17 Air going eSIM-only worldwide for the first time, this marks a major shift for Apple customers across the world. It sets a new standard for how people expect to stay connected while travelling.

“But the truth is not every mobile network is ready yet. The ability to use an eSIM is not just country-dependent, it’s also device and network-dependent. That means a traveller could land somewhere only to find their network does not support eSIM, or that their plan options are limited. And if their phone is locked to a network, they won’t be able to switch to a local network via eSIM at all.”

But Sarah also adds that when travellers can access local eSIM plans, it can be “far better than relying on roaming”.

She says: “With a local eSIM plan, you’re seen as a local user on the network, so you avoid the delays and lag or latency that sometimes come with data roaming.

“It’s faster, reliable, and gives you the same quality of service as people who live in that country.”

But for travellers considering an iPhone 17 Air, planning ahead would be more important than ever.

The team at Sim Local advises that travellers would need to research local networks and find operators in their destination which support eSIM and what plans are available.

They would also need to download an eSIM in advance. Buying a local eSIM before arriving ensures connectivity when you land.

As Sarah puts it: “Nobody wants to land in a new country and waste time hunting down a SIM card. You want to turn on your phone and be connected straight away. With a local eSIM plan you can do exactly that. Check the best local eSIM plans, pick the best deal, and be online in minutes.

“Apple’s eSIM focus with the iPhone 17 Air is raising the bar for how convenient staying connected can be. It’s up to the industry to make sure travellers can always find easy and affordable ways to stay connected.”

+ simlocal.com

eSIM EXPLAINED

Unlike physical SIM cards, an eSIM is a digital SIM that can be downloaded on to compatible smartphones.

An eSIM is the digital SIM built into most current phones, which eliminates the need for a physical SIM card. You can use it on most up-to-date(ish) phones, but the SIM and eSIM will have different numbers. As the SIM and eSIM have different service providers, the phone must be unlocked (you have to “own it”).

I’ve used Airalo in the past without any connectivity issues.

Camera IconiPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max feature a new design that maximises performance and delivers an enormous leap in battery life.
