Names such as Cathy Freeman, Ian Thorpe, and Louise Sauvage will forever live in the memories of Australians who witnessed greatness on home soil.

They set standards not just in results but in how they carried themselves — with pride, humility, and determination. To see them honoured in 2025 while our current generation competes at the world athletics championships in Japan feels like a full-circle moment.

In my own home, and even across the street with the neighbours, I’ve noticed a huge buzz around these Tokyo championships. Falling in our time zone and at the time of year our kids are lining up for their own school athletics carnivals, the connection is real for Aussie kids this time around.

The athletes we’re watching on the world stage are inspiring the next generation, and they’re giving those of us past our prime a reason to sit back and watch in awe.

What stands out most is the way the Australians – often underdogs – have approached this meet. Each athlete brings their own story, their own battles, and their own reasons for being there. Yet, there’s a unifying thread: they compete for themselves, but also for each other, and for a nation watching on from home.

Take Jessica Hull. She’s been a consistent source of inspiration, not only because of her talent but because of the way she carries herself. She races hard, determined to be the best, but always with that trademark smile.

Camera IconSilver medalist Dorcus Ewoi of Team Kenya, gold medalist Faith Kipyegon of Team Kenya and bronze medalist Jessica Hull of Team Australia pose for a photo. Credit: Christian Petersen/Getty Images

In the 1500m, her determination to hold onto a bronze medal spot prevented an all-Kenyan podium. In her 800m heat she showed her resilience. Even in a race where she hit the deck and suffered a nasty cut, she got up, composed herself, and kept going. That moment wasn’t about medals or records; it was about character.

Hull proved that grace under pressure is just as valuable as podium finishes. To me, that’s what representing Australia is about: courage, humility, and composure when it matters most.

Of course, everyone wants to see gold medals and record-breaking times. But sometimes, personal bests tell a story that matters more.

We’ve seen plenty of Australians post PBs and break national records at these championships. They might not all have medals to hang around their necks, but what they do have is proof that they are squeezing every last drop of effort into their performances. That matters.

Sport isn’t only about finishing first; it’s about striving, improving, and pitting yourself against the best in the world. And maybe one day, after all that, the results will come your way.

Then there’s Gout Gout. At just 17 years old, this Queensland schoolboy has captured the imagination of the country. Running against men who are world champions and seasoned sprinters, he showed us he’s not just here to make up the numbers.

Camera IconGout Gout of Team Australia reacts after failing to qualify for the Final during the Men’s 200 Metres Semi-Finals. Credit: Hannah Peters/Getty Images

Gout’s semifinal run in the 200m was electric — our household was loud enough to wake the street. But what impressed me most wasn’t just the time on the clock. It was the way he carried himself afterwards. He moved around the track congratulating rivals, showing respect, and receiving it in return. That sort of composure and humility at his age is almost as exciting as his speed.

For me, success is what Gout did in Japan. This was experience, and valuable experience at that. To test yourself against the best in the world at 17 and walk away with lessons, confidence, and the respect of your competitors — that’s success.

You can’t help but dream ahead to 2032, when Brisbane hosts the Olympics, and think about what it would mean to watch Gout in his prime, in front of a home crowd. But he doesn’t need to rush. Step by step, race by race, he’s building something special.

Watching these athletes has lit something in our kids. They’re seeing what effort looks like. They’re learning lessons that apply far beyond sport: if you fall, you get back up. If you’re the slowest in your heat or the one who throws the shortest distance, you still give it everything you’ve got.

Camera IconXavi Mo-Ajok of Team Netherlands and Gout Gout of Team Australia compete during the Men’s 200m Semi-Final. Credit: Christian Petersen/Getty Images

Competing hard, having a go, and refusing to quit — that’s the essence of athletics, and that’s what the world championships have shown us.

Australia isn’t the biggest or strongest athletics nation on paper. We don’t top the medal counts, and that’s OK. What matters is that our athletes represent us with fight, dignity, and heart. Every personal best, every national record, every moment of resilience — those are victories in their own right.

A quarter of a century on from Sydney 2000, with Freeman’s golden lap, Thorpe’s dominance in the pool, and Sauvage’s triumphs on wheels still etched in our minds, it feels fitting that a new generation is carving out their own stories.

Hull, Gout, and so many others are not just competing; they’re inspiring. They’re reminding us why we love sport, why we gather in living rooms to cheer at screens, and why our kids head off to school carnivals believing they, too, can have a go.

That’s the legacy of Sydney, carried forward in Japan. Not just medals and records, but the spark that keeps us all believing anything is possible.

[4
5654,64,63,44,588
0":"post-156224","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-australia","8":"tag-athletics","9":"tag-au","10":"tag-australia","11":"tag-news","12":"tag-sport
["GET
