Doull, Bookseller has been an institution in the city since 1987. It\u00a0specializes\u00a0in rare and out-of-print books, but carries\u00a0a bit of everything and anything a bookworm could wish for.<\/p>\n<p>The used\u00a0bookstore, which has been located on Main Street in Dartmouth since 2021,\u00a0has a massive\u00a0inventory that Doull\u00a0recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/john-w-doull-bookseller-profile-1.6910639\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:estimated at 2 to 3 million books;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">estimated at 2 to 3 million books<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If accurate, that would make the store one of the largest\u00a0in Canada. But its days may be numbered.<\/p>\n<p>Doull didn&#8217;t respond to an interview request\u00a0Tuesday, but Jacob Smith \u2014 the business&#8217;s only other employee \u2014\u00a0said\u00a0they&#8217;re two months behind on rent. They&#8217;ve\u00a0been given notice by the building&#8217;s landlord, Yellowstone Commercial Properties, that if they don&#8217;t catch up by Friday, they&#8217;ll be evicted.<\/p>\n<p>Including next month&#8217;s rent, Smith estimated\u00a0the store needs to bring in $15,000 to $20,000 in revenue by Friday evening.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Jacob Smith has been working at John W. (Andrew Sampson\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>He was initially pessimistic they&#8217;d have any chance of reaching this goal, but after word circulated online that the shop was in trouble, he said business picked up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On Monday, we did probably $4,000, $4,500 worth of sales, so if we can keep that ball rolling, it&#8217;ll be good,&#8221; Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>Prices on the entirety of the massive inventory have been discounted by 40 per cent in an attempt to draw in buyers and raise the funds.<\/p>\n<p>Business has picked up<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the store was as busy as Smith had ever seen it, filled with longtime regulars and\u00a0new customers.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Reynolds said his partner, who&#8217;d been coming to the store since she was a kid, tipped him off about the sale after reading about the store&#8217;s finances online.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She was really sad that it was closing and she knows that I love books,&#8221; he said. &#8220;She told me it&#8217;s like a maze so I definitely wanted to come and check it out before it closed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"News of the store's financial troubles inspired these readers to come out and show their support. \" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/f9ecc4d5993e8e5137ad8009e03dc027.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>News of the store&#8217;s financial troubles inspired these readers to come out and show their support. (Andrew Sampson\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>Former employee Jane Sodero, who first worked at the bookstore when it was located on Hollis Street\u00a0in Halifax, came down shortly after hearing the news.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s going to be such a loss to the\u00a0city to not have a bookstore of this magnitude,&#8221; she said.\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;Any book on any topic imaginable is available here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Historian Holly Hanes has been a regular since around 2018. (Andrew Sampson\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>Will Radford, the controller for Yellowstone Commercial Developments, said the company is willing to work with Doull if he meets Friday&#8217;s deadline.<\/p>\n<p>But he said it&#8217;s not the first time Doull has had trouble making rent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re really hoping that, you know, he&#8217;ll turn around the operation and be able to pay us money and continue to lease from us,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If they can&#8217;t pay the money at that time, then we would end up taking possession of the unit \u2026 and John Doull&#8217;s business would be evicted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"One of the crown jewels of Doull's shop is this wall dedicated to Penguin Books, featuring hundreds of paperback editions from the publisher.
