Matthew Lloyd<\/a> believes Collingwood<\/a> might have to make some brutal list management calls in the next few weeks in order to avoid having too many veterans retire at once. <\/p>\n

The Magpies’ season came to an end<\/a> on Saturday night, going down to Brisbane<\/a> in a preliminary final upset.<\/p>\n

Already the oldest list in the competition by a significant margin, the Pies have contract decisions to make on a chunk of players approaching their mid 30s, including Brody Mihocek, Jamie Elliott, Mason Cox, Tom Mitchell, Steele Sidebottom and Jeremy Howe.<\/p>\n

They’ve already re-signed soon-to-be 38-year-old Scott Pendlebury for next year, while Howe (36 next year) and Sidebottom (35 next year) are also set to play on.<\/p>\n

Mihocek and Elliott have both been linked with rival teams in the trade period, with coach Craig McRae confirming after the match<\/a> that the club had two-year contracts on the table for the pair.<\/p>\n

Mihocek played through a significant toe injury during the finals series, and had minimal impact on the contest.<\/p>\n

Lloyd wonders whether he is someone the Pies should let leave in order to help them stagger the exits of these veterans. <\/p>\n

“It’s about how you stagger (their exits). You can’t have them all go at once and it’ll be tough for Collingwood’s list management,” Lloyd told Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.<\/p>\n

“Membrey has another year of a contract, so I presume he will play on, but Tom Mitchell and Mason Cox (should go).<\/p>\n

“I’d let Brody Mihocek go. This would be the first time I’ve said that, but I think the way he has played and performed and without a contract he hasn’t performed well.<\/p>\n

“Maybe let those guys go now and then the three real champions go the next year.”<\/p>\n

Mihocek reportedly has interest from both Melbourne and North Melbourne in the trade period.<\/p>\n

As for Elliott, who has been linked with a move to Gold Coast, Lloyd believes the Magpies must do whatever it takes to re-sign him.<\/p>\n

The 33-year-old has an excellent season, kicking 60 goals and taking one of the marks of the year in the prelim loss. <\/p>\n

“I think you give him the two years that he deserves and make him a Pie for life,” Lloyd said.<\/p>\n

Collingwood premiership captain Tony Shaw would go one step further with the list calls, saying the Pies should attempt to trade Bobby Hill.<\/p>\n

The 2023 Norm Smith Medallist was not selected for the finals series and barely featured in the second half of the year, dealing with personal issues.<\/p>\n

Shaw believes Collingwood should cash in the 25-year-old in order to stock up on draft picks.<\/p>\n

“That’s something they’ve got to look at now,” Shaw told 3AW.<\/p>\n

“Bobby Hill, I’d be looking to see what you could get trade wise. It’s a horrible situation, but he’s probably good fodder at the moment, you could get a couple of draft picks and it doesn’t look like it’s working for him (at Collingwood).”<\/p>\n

McRae said after the game that he was still keen to add experienced players in the trade period, but understands the club also needs to hit the draft.<\/p>\n

“I’m not going to stand still trying to get better,” McRae told reporters.<\/p>\n

“Last year I said it was players over picks. It won’t be that extreme this year, there’ll be a balance, but we want to bring talent into our organisation that makes us better.<\/p>\n

“I won’t stand still on that. I’m sure our fans want to hear that. Our players want to hear that we’re not going to stand still and going to keep improving ourselves.<\/p>\n
