Three years after Tyson Stengle capped off his remarkable AFL career resurrection with a premiership, the Geelong forward believes a second flag would hold greater significance.<\/p>\n

Stengle, cut by Adelaide for off-field reasons, seized his AFL lifeline with the Cats in 2022.<\/p>\n

The dynamic small forward, then 23, was named All-Australian and kicked 53 goals, including four in Geelong’s thumping win over Sydney in the grand final.<\/p>\n

But Geelong missed the finals in 2023 and endured a preliminary-final exit last year.<\/p>\n

For Stengle, it underlined the importance of reaching this year’s season decider against the Brisbane Lions and then sealing a second trip to the AFL’s summit.<\/p>\n

“It was great to come back into the system and win one, but I reckon now as a player that’s been at the club for a long time, it would mean more,” Stengle said.<\/p>\n

“Because I’d only been there for a year, whereas now I’ve been there for four years, and I’ve seen all the heartbreak of the last four years.<\/p>\n

“So, I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully, we can get a good prep in and we can get the win next Saturday.”<\/p>\n

Cats into grand final but Stewart out<\/a><\/p>\n

Geelong utility Tom Stewart will miss the AFL grand final, but coach Chris Scott feels his Cats are in a great position to win the premiership.<\/p>\n

Stengle, now 26, learned much from the 2022 premiership season, including the importance of savouring every moment.<\/p>\n

“Three years ago, it went pretty fast,” he said.<\/p>\n

“So I reckon this time I’ll probably soak it in, the parade and all that type of stuff, [and] take my time with everything, enjoy the week, go into the grand final and hopefully get the win.”<\/p>\n

Stengle posted a less-than-prolific season on the scoreboard, in terms of goals and behinds.<\/p>\n

But he is not too fazed as he looks ahead to the grand final.<\/p>\n

“My year’s been alright. I kicked a lot of points this year, so that’s probably why,” Stengle said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

“But when it comes to finals, that’s what we play for.<\/p>\n

“Happy to get to the grand final \u2026 the rest of the year doesn’t really matter at this point.”<\/p>\n
