It was a word I might have prefaced with the outdated word \u201csenile\u201d.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">I could no longer put my mother\u2019s forgetting, dropped words and confusion about where she was down to \u201csenior moments\u201d. This was serious, and it was clinical.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, I have written hundreds of thousands of words on dementia in the Post, and in <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/lifestyle\/health-wellness\/article\/3277273\/when-parent-dementia-forgets-youre-their-child-coping-alzheimers-disease?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">my book<\/a> A Silent Tsunami: Swimming Against the Tide of My Mother\u2019s Dementia.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The cover of A Silent Tsunami: Swimming Against the Tide of My Mother\u2019s Dementia. Photo: Bedford Square<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">I have written about how the disease presents in a person, my experience of caring for my mother, the causes, my quest to find a cure or treatment that might slow it, and the lifestyle modifications we can make to protect our brains.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Despite the increasing prevalence of the condition \u2013 according to the World Health Organization, more than 55 million people globally have dementia, and that is expected to almost triple by 2050 \u2013 the news is hopeful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Five years ago, I knew very little about dementia.
