{"id":159306,"date":"2025-09-21T18:03:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-21T18:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/159306\/"},"modified":"2025-09-21T18:03:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-21T18:03:11","slug":"stadium-expansion-proposed-to-cater-for-sports-boom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/159306\/","title":{"rendered":"Stadium expansion proposed to cater for sport&#8217;s boom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Public consultation is underway for a basketball stadium expansion that proponents say would address a \u201ccritical and growing demand\u201d for indoor courts.<\/p>\n<p>The Maroochydore Eagles Basketball Association has submitted a development application to expand its venue at 410 Mooloolaba Road, which is within the Elizabeth Daniels Park sports and recreation precinct at Buderim.<\/p>\n<p>The site currently features a three-court stadium and some amenities, and the club wants to add three more courts and further services.<\/p>\n<p>A town planning report compiled by Adams and Sparkes, detailed why the expansion was needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA key consideration is the critical and growing demand for indoor court infrastructure across the Sunshine Coast,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince 2019, basketball participation has surged \u2026 with the number of players on the Sunshine Coast increasing from approximately 29,000 to 74,000.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-180215 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SCN170925-bball-courts-picture-engineering-building-design-studio-1-e1758088087835.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"982\" height=\"401\"  \/>The expansion would essentially see a new building (right) erected next to the current one. Picture: Engineering and Building Design Studio.<\/p>\n<p>The new section would include three courts, change rooms, referee facilities, storage, gym, clubroom, canteen, reception area and office space.<\/p>\n<p>The planned building would be 10.629m high, which would exceed the height limit of 8.5m for the area but would be consistent with the height of the existing building, which was constructed prior to the adaptation of the current planning scheme and is a height that is deemed necessary to accommodate basketball courts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy matching the height, scale and form of the existing stadium, the proposed extension respects the visual character and amenity of the site and its surrounding context,\u201d the planning report stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe site is well separated from nearby residential areas, and the additional height does not result in unacceptable overshadowing, privacy impacts or loss of views. Picture: Patrick Woods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe development aligns with the strategic intent of the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014, which encourages investment in resilient, adaptable and community-focused infrastructure that supports active, healthy lifestyles.
