yet many consumers misunderstand the language used to describe their home connectivity, new research has claimed.<\/p>\n<p>A survey of UK adults by TalkTalk claims although three-quarters claim to understand \u201cWi-Fi,\u201d almost a quarter remain unclear about its meaning.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"6e73c24b-1133-4598-9983-ac4130f7d51d-2\">When asked which word they use for home connectivity, one third of respondents said \u201cWi-Fi,\u201d slightly ahead of \u201cinternet\u201d and \u201cbroadband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-c07b6020-c141-490a-a450-155678e50a90\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Preferred terminology and confusion between services<\/p>\n<p id=\"cd2c02fb-d1e2-4575-bef2-e58e65bd58c0\">Far fewer selected \u201cwireless\u201d or more informal alternatives like \u201cT\u2019internet\u201d to describe home connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>Despite telecom companies still pushing broadband branding, public usage indicates a shift toward everyday terms that feel familiar.<\/p>\n<p>However, this preference does not always translate into an accurate understanding.<\/p>\n<p>Many still mix up broadband, the wired service entering the property, with Wi-Fi, the wireless signal distributed inside the home by a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/networking\/routers-storage\/best-router-9-top-wireless-routers-on-test-1090523\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/networking\/routers-storage\/best-router-9-top-wireless-routers-on-test-1090523\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">router<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some even believe the two terms are identical or that broadband is simply an older name for Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n<p>In rating participants&#8217; confidence with various networking terms, 76% said they understand \u201cWi-Fi,\u201d but confidence drops when the language becomes more technical.<\/p>\n<p>Only half reported knowing what \u201cfiber\u201d means, even though service providers heavily advertise fiber broadband.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Terms like \u201cIP address,\u201d \u201cLAN,\u201d and \u201cFTTP\u201d ranked far lower, with single-digit familiarity for some entries.<\/p>\n<p>This knowledge gap extends to security tools, as just over half said they understand VPNs, even though the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/vpn\/best-vpn\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/vpn\/best-vpn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">best VPNs<\/a> are always on our screens.<\/p>\n<p>Despite several ads about the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/vpn\/best-vpn-uk\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/vpn\/best-vpn-uk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">best VPN for the UK<\/a>, many Britons barely know anything more than the basic functions of VPNs.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers are not taking the blame for the knowledge gap;
