{"id":161568,"date":"2025-09-22T18:12:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T18:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/161568\/"},"modified":"2025-09-22T18:12:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T18:12:09","slug":"nrl-veteran-retires-following-super-league-stint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/161568\/","title":{"rendered":"NRL veteran retires following Super League stint"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/S4A6783.jpg\" class=\"attachment- size- wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>An NRL veteran of almost 250 games has made the decision to retire following a two-season spell in Super League.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seriousaboutrl.com\/catalans-dragons-confirm-13-player-exits-with-two-more-retirements-and-luke-keary-departure-confirmed-107862\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tariq Sims was one of 13 players released by Catalans Dragons<\/a> at the end of the 2025 season and he becomes the fourth from that bunch to retire.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Tomkins and Elliott Whitehead confirmed their retirement at the time whilst fellow former NRL man <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seriousaboutrl.com\/rugby-league-news-catalans-dragons-and-former-nrl-star-retires-from-rugby-league-ages-28-108008\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reimis Smith announced his later<\/a>, causing surprise given the fact he\u2019s just 28.<\/p>\n<p>Sims now becomes the latest to hang up the boots with the 35-year-old calling time on an impressive career that spanned 14 years.<\/p>\n<p>He is part of a rugby league family that includes brothers Ashton and Korbin, who both also played in Super League, sister, Ruan, who was a dual-code international, as well as reported London Broncos target Reagan Campbell-Gillard, who is his cousin.<\/p>\n<p>Capped five times by Fiji and with six appearances for New South Wales, Sims ends his career following his second season with Catalans.<\/p>\n<p>Serious About Rugby League has launched a brand new podcast which can be watched in full on our <a class=\"in-cell-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zXgPI1xykFw&amp;t=1402s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">YouTube channel here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tariq Sims confirms retirement after Super League release<\/p>\n<p>He joined ahead of the 2024 season from Melbourne Storm but he\u2019d spent the bulk of his career at St George Illawarra and his debut club North Queensland Cowboys.<\/p>\n<p>In total, Sims played almost 250 NRL games and then made 37 in Super League for Les Dracs, including 16 in his injury-hit 2025 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Taking to social media to bid farewell to the game, Sims penned a lengthy message that saw him make thanks to those who helped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I close this chapter of my career, I want to take a moment to thank the people who made it possible,\u201d Sims posted on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>Thanking his wife, Ashleigh, and children, Lakia and Vayla, he spoke on their support and motivation labelling his girls as the \u201cbiggest motivation and greatest joy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>His siblings and parents were also praised with Paul McGregor, his coach at the Dragons, singled out for a \u2018special thank you\u2019 as someone who had \u2018inspired, challenged and demanded the best\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Sims concluded his statement, saying: \u201cLastly the NRL not only for giving me the opportunity to play, but also for allowing my family, who wholeheartedly love this game, to be a part of it for so long.
