(Image credit: NASA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"65c953a5-d588-4c73-a3e1-7fd38f83804f\">The primary payload is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-imap-interstellar-dust-2025-launch\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-imap-interstellar-dust-2025-launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IMAP<\/a>, whose name is short for &#8220;Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"65c953a5-d588-4c73-a3e1-7fd38f83804f-1\">IMAP &#8220;will study how the sun&#8217;s energy and particles interact with the heliosphere \u2014 an enormous protective bubble of space around our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a> \u2014 to enhance our understanding of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space weather<\/a>, cosmic radiation, and their impacts on Earth and human and robotic space explorers,&#8221; NASA officials wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-sets-launch-coverage-for-space-weather-missions\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-sets-launch-coverage-for-space-weather-missions\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mission description<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Launching with IMAP are NASA&#8217;s Carruthers Geocorona Observatory (CGO) and the Space Weather Follow-on (SWFO-L1) spacecraft, which will be operated by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).<\/p>\n<p>CGO will study Earth&#8217;s exosphere \u2014 the atmosphere&#8217;s wispiest outer reaches \u2014 to help scientists better understand how space weather affects our planet. SWFO-L1 will monitor and track <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/12584-worst-solar-storms-sun-flares-history.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/12584-worst-solar-storms-sun-flares-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar storms<\/a>, &#8220;serving as an early warning beacon for potentially disruptive space weather, helping safeguard Earth\u2019s critical infrastructure and technological-dependent industries,&#8221; NASA officials wrote in the mission description.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p id=\"9e7cad35-3c23-4526-b73f-1339955db3f9\">The trio will do this work at the Earth-sun <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30302-lagrange-points.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30302-lagrange-points.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lagrange Point-1<\/a> (L1), a gravitationally stable spot that lies 930,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers) from our planet. Several other spacecraft operate at L1, including India&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/sun\/indias-aditya-l1-solar-probe-watches-powerful-flare-erupt-from-the-sun\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/sun\/indias-aditya-l1-solar-probe-watches-powerful-flare-erupt-from-the-sun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aditya-L1<\/a> solar probe and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), a joint effort of NASA and the European Space Agency.<\/p>\n<p>If all goes according to plan on Wednesday, the Falcon 9&#8217;s upper stage will deploy IMAP, CGO and SWFO-L1 into interplanetary transfer orbit during a 13-minute stretch that begins about 83 minutes after liftoff.
