{"id":163617,"date":"2025-09-23T14:03:20","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T14:03:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/163617\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T14:03:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T14:03:20","slug":"former-cricket-umpire-dickie-bird-dies-aged-92-cricket-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/163617\/","title":{"rendered":"Former cricket umpire Dickie Bird dies aged 92 | Cricket News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Harold \u201cDickie\u201d Bird, one of cricket\u2019s most famous and much-loved former umpires , has died at the age of 92, England\u2019s Yorkshire County Cricket Club (CCC) has announced.<\/p>\n<p>Bird \u201cdied peacefully at home\u201d, Yorkshire CCC wrote in a post announcing Bird\u2019s death on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>He began his umpiring career in 1973 and officiated in 66 Test matches, 69 men\u2019s one-day internationals and three World Cup finals before retiring in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>He was given a guard of honour at Lord\u2019s Cricket Ground by England and India players before his final Test.<\/p>\n<p>Bird\u2019s eccentric and humorous character endeared him to cricket fans around the world and across generations.<\/p>\n<p>Yorkshire called Bird a \u201cnational treasure\u201d who was \u201cknown not only for his umpiring excellence but also for his eccentricities and warmth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDickie Bird enjoyed an illustrious career as an international umpire, writing his name into history as the most famous and popular official in the game\u2019s history,\u201d the club said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe leaves behind a legacy of sportsmanship, humility, and joy \u2013 and a legion of admirers across generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bird, who sold more than a million copies of his autobiography, was named Yorkshire president in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Bird\u2019s first-class playing career, which included spells with his beloved Yorkshire and Leicestershire, was cut short by injury at the age of 32 with an average of 20.71.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to become arguably the world\u2019s most famous umpire, standing in an English county match for the first time in 1970.<\/p>\n<p>In 1975, Bird took charge of the inaugural men\u2019s Cricket World Cup final.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDickie enjoyed an illustrious career as an umpire,\u201d the Lord\u2019s-based Marylebone Cricket Club said, \u201cand was one of the most popular officials in the history of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An umpire long before the introduction of technology to cricket, Bird was renowned for being cautious with his decisions and making few clear mistakes, telling the BBC that his parents \u201d instilled this mental strength to believe in myself\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In his pomp and in his later years, he was as popular as the players he officiated, never refusing to sign an autograph and often was seen waiting patiently to do so even when lines were long. His autobiography was Britain\u2019s biggest-selling sports book.<\/p>\n<p>It was his idiosyncrasies that made him so loved \u2013 the way he raised his finger to give a batter out, his warmth and conversational approach with players, his grin, his stooping gait, how he twitched his arms and tugged at his umpire\u2019s jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Bird listed Garfield Sobers, Sunil Gavaskar, Viv Richards and Dennis Lillee as the best players he ever umpired. His one regret in life, Bird told The Guardian newspaper in 2013, was not having a family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave my life to cricket. It\u2019s as simple as that,\u201d he said. \u201cI never got married because I was married to the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">MCC is deeply saddened to hear of the death of Harold &#8220;Dickie&#8221; Bird.
