Chris Fagan has been honoured twice at the AFL Coaches Association awards in the week when he tries to engineer back-to-back Brisbane premierships.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Fagan became the first three-time senior coach of the year, plus he was recognised with the association’s lifetime achievement award.<\/p>\n

At 63, he became the oldest AFL premiership coach last year, as well as the first not to have played at senior level.<\/p>\n

He also won the senior coach honour last year and in 2019.<\/p>\n

The award, named after legendary St Kilda and Hawthorn premiership coach Allan Jeans, has been running for 22 years and is voted on by association members.<\/p>\n

Fagan won comfortably with 305 votes ahead of his rival in this Saturday’s grand final – Geelong’s Chris Scott (245) – and Adelaide’s Matthew Nicks (128).<\/p>\n

Brisbane has been Fagan’s only AFL senior coaching role and when he took over in 2017, they finished last.<\/p>\n

But they steadily rose up the ladder and this will be their third-straight premiership decider.<\/p>\n

Fagan has battled health problems, including cancer, and dealt with the stress of being involved in the Hawthorn racism controversy, where ultimately there were no adverse findings against him.<\/p>\n

He had an extensive coaching history in his native Tasmania before moving to Melbourne under Neale Daniher in the late ’90s.<\/p>\n

The lifetime achievement award is named after Daniher, who announced Fagan’s honour at the Tuesday night function in Melbourne.<\/p>\n

After working as an assistant at Melbourne, Fagan also spent several years in coaching and football administration at Hawthorn before going to Brisbane.<\/p>\n
