Italy’s workforce is going to lose
\nover six million people who are set to retire in the next
\ndecade, as the nation’s population continues to rapidly age,
\nNatale Forlani, the president of National Institute for the
\nAnalysis of Public Policy (INAPP), said on Tuesday.

\n\t\t\t\t“In just 10 years, about 6.1 million Italians will exit the
\nlabour market,” Forlani told a hearing of the parliamentary
\ncommission of inquiry into the demographic transition
\n“It’s a generational exodus that risks leaving the country
\nwithout replacement workers and putting the resilience of
\nwelfare system into crisis.”
\nHe said that working-age population (20-64) will will shrink by
\n34% by 2060, with inevitable consequences for economic growth,
\nwelfare and the sustainability of public spending.

\n\t\t\t\tForlani said this meant policies to regenerate the working
\npopulation and make social spending sustainable were urgently
\nneeded, stressing that lifting the retirement age cannot be the
\nsolution on its own.
