Five experts explain what&#8217;s wrong with that statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Trump administration has issued controversial advice about the possible causes of autism, suggesting the neurodevelopmental condition could be linked to the use of paracetamol in pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The claim has been criticised by medical experts, who say there&#8217;s no evidence the drug causes the condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In Australia, they&#8217;re also concerned it will deter expectant mothers from using paracetamol to treat fever or pain, which could prove detrimental to the health of the child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Here&#8217;s what they had to say.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew WhitehouseThe Kids Research Institute Australia<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Whitehouse, who researches autism in children, said that there is categorically no evidence that paracetamol use causes the condition.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He says some studies have suggested a &#8220;small, weak&#8221; association, but they haven&#8217;t proven a cause or link.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;At best, this is a misreading of science; at worst, it is a misuse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He pointed to other studies that suggest there is no connection and is concerned that this will deter use of the drug when it may be necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Women don&#8217;t take paracetamol during pregnancy on a whim,&#8221; <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/am\/doctors-alarmed-as-trump-links-autism-to-paracetamol\/105805616\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he told AM.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What we know is that paracetamol is really effective in reducing fever in pregnancy, and also reducing pain. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr McMullen says paracetamol is considered a category A medicine, which means the TGA and other regulators consider it safe to use in pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Certainly for pain or fever in pregnancy, the advice is still here that paracetamol in pregnancy is a reasonable and safe option for Australian women to use,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s really important that we think about that science and critically analyse it before causing fear in families, and hence, why the medical community today is responding and saying all medicines should be used with caution during pregnancy, but paracetamol has been widely used and is still considered a safe option.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Norman SwanRadio National&#8217;s Health Report host<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Primary Image for Norman Swan\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/97f5cac6f28285653c25a4ec2d871e38\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Swan says the studies that Mr Trump is pointing to are &#8220;messy&#8221; and &#8220;poorly conducted&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When you have looked at the studies, the definition of what is wrong with the children has been loose, you&#8217;re not quite sure if the woman did take Tylenol, the paracetamol and what they took it for,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Women are taking it for a reason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What is known is that fever in pregnancy is not good for the unborn child and you want to prevent fever, hence influenza immunisation, hence COVID immunisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You want to minimise the chances a woman will get infected with a virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If you do get a fever, paracetamol is what will get rid of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hannah KirkNational Health and Medical Research Council<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Kirk, a fellow at Monash University, said Mr Trump&#8217;s announcement had raised concern among expectant parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition with no known single cause; however, research shows that genetics play a large role, with hundreds of genes being linked to autism,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;No study has shown that acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol, causes autism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Some studies have reported an association between acetaminophen use and autism, while others have not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Importantly, association does not mean causation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scott WhiteRoyal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The chair of RANZCOG said robust scientific evidence shows no link between paracetamol use in pregnancy and autism or ADHD, with several large and reliable studies directly contradicting the Trump administration&#8217;s statement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-23\/taking-paracetamol-during-pregnancy-does-not-cause-autism\/105806092\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s why paracetamol is safe to take during pregnancy<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Donald Trump&#8217;s advice that pregnant women should limit the use of paracetamol in pregnancy has been criticised as &#8220;baseless&#8221;.
