Eddie McGuire<\/a> has paid tribute to Footy Show<\/a> figure Chris Doheny following his death at age 64.<\/p>\n

Doheny, the voice behind the iconic ‘More Than a Game’ anthem from Nine’s The Footy Show, was killed when his ute collided with a truck on the Thiele Highway in Kapunda, South Australia, on Friday.<\/p>\n

While many will remember Doheny for his role as the voice behind the anthem that became a cultural institution, his musical career spanned far beyond the world of football.<\/p>\n

Before lending his voice to the song, Doheny was a prominent figure in the Australian music scene. He was the frontman for the ’80s pop-rock band Geisha, known for hits like ‘Kabuki’, ‘Fools Way’ and ‘Part Time Love Affair, and also worked as a songwriter and producer for other artists.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday night, McGuire paid tribute to Doheny on Nine’s Footy Classified, after a brief moment of silence.<\/p>\n

“Vale to Chris Doheny, the voice of ‘More Than A Game’,” he said.<\/p>\n

“A great friend of ours at the Footy Show back in the day here at Channel Nine, who passed away in a car accident in South Australia at the weekend at 64 years of age.”<\/p>\n

The former Footy Show host said his thoughts are with Doheny’s family and friends.<\/p>\n

“He was a musical genius with one of the great anthems of AFL football. It is more than a game. Vale Chris,” he said.<\/p>\n

The Footy Show, which ran for 26 seasons, went off air in 2019.<\/p>\n

Before his death, Doheny was working on a special vinyl reissue of his band Geisha’s self-titled album to celebrate its 40th anniversary, his music label confirmed in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n

“It is with deep sadness that Diamond Dog Records announces the passing of Geisha frontman, Chris Doheny, on Friday, 19 September 2025,” the statement read.<\/p>\n

“Chris was about to release the 40th anniversary album on vinyl, which will now be moved to a later date. At this difficult time, we kindly ask for privacy and understanding as we, along with Chris’s family and friends, come to terms with this profound loss.”<\/p>\n

Tributes from the Australian music industry have poured in this week as news of Doheny’s death spread.<\/p>\n

Music writer and friend Greg Phillip said Doheny also had plans to perform live.<\/p>\n

“Few voices in Australian music carried the blend of charisma, vulnerability and sheer rock ‘n’ roll spirit quite like Chris Doheny,” he said in a tribute published in the Australian Musician Magazine on Monday.<\/p>\n

“His soaring vocals and magnetic stage presence gave Geisha their signature identity – equal parts glamorous and deeply human.<\/p>\n

“The last time I spoke with Chris, which was only a month ago, he was excitedly talking about the re-release of [the 40th anniversary edition] and the shows he was planning around it.”<\/p>\n

Kids in the Kitchen frontman Scott Carne wrote on social media: “Top bloke and an amazing singer.
